Summary/

Purpose:

Supports distribution operations by keeping right-of-way area clear of brush and trees.

Responsibilities

The following are the typical duties of this position and do not include marginal functions that are incidental to the performance of fundamental job duties and may include other duties as assigned. The scope and duties of a given position may change or be temporarily altered based on the business needs of NAEC. All employees are expected to work in a safe manner and follow all safety rules and regulations at all times.

  • Assists line crews with construction of power lines by cutting right-of-way. Locates work site by reading detailed maps.
  • Maintains right-of-way by climbing or using aerial device to trim trees around energized lines.
  • Operates chain saws and chipper equipment to remove and breakdown vegetation.
  • Operates tractor, bush hogs, and other equipment associated with right-of-way clearing and maintenance.
  • Maintains a safe working environment by adhering to policies, procedures and regulations.
  • May be required to apply vegetation control materials requiring certification in the use of hazardous materials.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education/Experience

High school diploma or equivalent. Prior experience with operating power-cutting equipment is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • CPR, First Aid.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Cooperative standards applying to employee’s work.
  • Thorough knowledge of the territory in which employee operates, the Cooperative facilities therein, and the principal customers’ connections thereto.
  • Proficiency in using and repairing power tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write/complete routine reports such as time sheets, accident reports.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to interact with customers and other employees in a courteous and proper manner.
  • Should have good working knowledge of OSHA Rules and Regulations and all Cooperative policies and procedures and Service Rules and Regulations and Rates.
Physical Demands / Working Conditions

General right-of-way clearing conditions for electric distribution system with irregular hours as deemed necessary by the position. Good dexterity to operate various pieces of brush cutting and tree trimming equipment. Frequent physical activity, to include walking, stooping, bending, frequent lifting up to 50 lbs., occasional lifting in excess of fifty lbs., climbing, kneeling, reaching, stooping, crawling, pushing, and working in awkward positions and enclosed spaces is normal.

Must possess a current Arkansas commercial driver’s license and have an insurable driving record. Must be able to operate a variety of motor vehicles, any and all devices pertaining to distribution system right-of-way clearing. Must have good hearing to get equipment noises and conditions accurately identified and analyzed. Must be able to communicate clearly and accurately for work and safety compliance.

Position requires travel throughout the Cooperative’s service territory and regularly working long days to meet deadlines.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is mostly outside. Sometimes there may be extreme weather conditions including wind, rain, snow, and dust, and the risk of electrical shock. Safety precautions and practices are required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, with frequent high levels requiring hearing protection.
