Overview
The Juvenile Corrections Officers I/II maintain the physical security of the facility and the health and welfare of all juvenile detainees. They address the physical needs of detainees—including meal preparation and distribution of equipment and hygiene supplies—maintain cleanliness of the facility, and provide educational programming to detainees.
This is a progression promotion position in which Juvenile Corrections Officer I’s may be promoted to Juvenile Corrections Officer II’s by recommendation from the Detention Manager, serving at least three years as a Juvenile Corrections Officer I, and having a current, acceptable performance evaluation. External candidates may be hired as a Juvenile Corrections Officer II if they meet the minimum requirements of the position and if the department is currently hiring for a Juvenile Corrections Officer II.
Salary- Juvenile Corrections Officer I — $30.44/hr to $32.59/hr
- Juvenile Corrections Officer II — $32.59/hr to $34.95/hr
- The Juvenile Corrections Officer I is range 13 of the Teamsters Juvenile Corrections salary schedule, top step ($38.73/hr).
- The Juvenile Corrections Officer II is range 14 of the Teamsters Juvenile Corrections salary schedule, top step ($41.48/hr).
- Process all admissions to detention, including obtaining legal screening criteria, property inventory, medical/mental health screening, frisk and/or strip searches, fingerprinting and photographing.
- Maintain security within the facility.
- Monitor all detainees.
- Attend to the physical and emotional needs of all detainees.
- Implement the detention behavioral point/level system.
- Ensure the serving of one meal per shift and maintain the cleanliness of the facility.
- Answer, screen and direct phone contacts.
- Transport detainees as required (court, doctor’s appointments, other institutions, etc.).
- Maintain accurate records, including a daily log and individual detainee files.
- Process all releases from detention.
- Juvenile Corrections Officer II will provide monthly educational programming to detainees.
- Order, stock and inventory supplies.
- Perform food services duties, which may include cooking and baking.
- Be available for flexible scheduling as facility needs dictate.
- Participate in special training in the areas of suicide prevention, defense tactics and emergency procedures.
- Provide supervision and oversight for facility programs, volunteers and visitors, and control for contraband.
- Perform related duties as required.
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical path to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
Required to attend the Juvenile Services Academy (80 hours) as a condition of continuing employment. Academy requires physical ability pre-test components including a push‑up test (90 seconds to complete 10 push‑ups), 90 seconds to complete 12 sit‑ups, and three minutes to complete 15 squat thrusts (burpees). Juvenile Corrections Officer II- Passed the WACJTC Academy.
- Passed the Staff Proficiency Test.
- Have 3 years of juvenile corrections experience.
- Instructor experience preferred.
- Practices and procedures of the juvenile justice system and related methods.
- Requirements for effective assessment, treatment, referral, care, and custody of juveniles.
- Regulations and requirements of local, state and federal programs addressing juvenile justice issues.
- Youth intervention and prevention programming and practices.
- Physical ability to restrain juveniles as necessary.
- Work independently.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Use various office computer systems.
- Use custody techniques and devices including: fingerprinting, handcuffs, leg, torso, and full body restraint equipment.
- Instruct—provide monthly educational training (Juvenile Corrections Officer II).
- Valid Washington State driver’s license.
- Food Handlers Card.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
