The DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Army Research Directorate conducts foundational experimental research at several experimental facilities to guide the development of lethality & protection technologies. This research also provides significant support to the acquisition community.
To fulfill this mission, there is a requirement for senior fabrication experience and leadership in experimental fabrication. As the Senior Experimental Fabrication SME III, you will, in coordination with ARL research engineers, independently fabricate and assemble a wide variety of complex, non‑standard experimental prototypes, structures, and fixtures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Preparation involves design and fabrication using a variety of specialized equipment such as plasma CNC cutting tables, multi‑axis waterjets, and welding machines.
- Act as a certified Ammo Handler, Explosive Operator, and Test Director (certification through on‑the‑job training).
- Mentor junior experimental fabrication technicians.
- Provide recommendations and implement improvements to the facility to enable state‑of‑the‑art experimentation.
- Incumbent must follow all safety regulations and use proper protective gear or equipment.
- Master's degree in Engineering or Applied Sciences.
- 7 years' experience in technology design and development of hardware systems or subsystems.
- 2 years' experience designing, developing, and testing in RDT&E directly related to the PWS; higher degree may substitute for years of experience.
- Extensive experience in the fabrication of warhead and armor experimentation test assets (test articles, fixtures, etc.) (15+ years).
- Extensive experience in advanced fabrication techniques, including the use of specialized welding equipment necessary for joining and repairing a wide variety of metals.
- Pass all required training deemed necessary by the ARL safety office and facility manager, which requires familiarity/understanding with all sites and SOPs for every site within the branch.
- Job duties require a significant amount of physical labor associated with setup and teardown of equipment and material at test sites.
- Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds.
- Work often involves prolonged periods of walking, standing, bending, or stooping.
- Work is often performed outdoors exposing incumbent to all types of weather conditions.
Active Secret required. Position is part time.
