OverviewState Highway Administration’s District 4 (Baltimore County) is recruiting a Traffic Engineer (Transportation Engineer III). This is a position specific recruitment open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below.
Responsibilities- Assist the Team Leader and the Assistant District Engineer in preparing highway construction projects for advertisement.
- Respond to citizen inquiries regarding traffic‑related concerns, including signs, pavement markings, flex posts, speeds, sidewalks, crosswalks, streetlights, traffic signals, and operational issues.
- Coordinate with SHA support divisions, engineering design consultants, state and county agencies, and community representatives during the project development process.
- Assist in project development for various programs such as Major Projects (Funds 70–72), Safety and Resurfacing (Fund 77), Safety and Spot Improvement (Fund 76), Intersection Capacity Improvement (Fund 87), Crash Prevention Improvement (Fund 30), Urban Reconstruction (Fund 84), Retrofit Sidewalk Program (Fund 79), Bicycle Retrofit Improvement (Funds 88), District Engineer’s Quick Action, Drainage, Environmental Impact, Structures, Candidate Safety Improvement Location (CSIL), Wet Pavement/High Friction Surface Treatment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
- Two (2) years of professional engineering experience.
Selective
Qualification:
- One (1) year of the required experience must have involved traffic engineering.
Notes:
- Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
- A master’s degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
- Persons registered as Professional Engineers in Maryland or a state with comparable requirements are considered to have met the education requirement.
Candidate must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in the state of Maryland.
Special RequirementsSelected candidate may be required to attend evening community meetings or conduct peak‑hour traffic observations outside of normal working hours.
