JOB TITLE:

Nurse Practitioner

General Summary of Duties

Responsible for providing primary care services, including assessing and managing patients in the clinic following established standards and practices.

Supervision

Receives supervision from the Medical Director and Clinic Administration.

Exercised supervision over Nurses, Nurse Aides, and Medical Assistants during daily clinical activities.

Responsibilities
  • Provide primary care as per the collaborative agreement/protocols on file in the Clinic and according to the policies and procedures of the Clinic
  • Practice within the scope of practice as delineated by the practitioner’s education and experience
  • Comply with all appropriate requirements for Clinic quality assurance and certification
  • Perform a complete physical exam, obtain complete medical history and record findings; order appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures; interpret and integrate data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan; prescribe therapy following established standards and practice.
  • Administer medications and injections in compliance with state law and clinic guidelines
  • Instruct patient/family regarding medications and treatments; educate patients regarding health and illness prevention; recommend community resources to meet patient and family needs.
  • Collaborate with physicians in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patients; provide monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
  • Maintain licensure and board certification
  • Maintain current PALS certification
  • Possess clear verbal and written communication skills
  • As a member of the QA committee, participate in the review of at least (15) patient medical charts per quarter
  • Assist the Medical Director in development of new policies and procedures as needed
  • In consultation with the Physician, make necessary referrals and/or consultations that cannot be provided at the Clinic
  • Assist in maintaining accurate and complete patient records
Education Required

Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant program leading to a Master’s Degree and/or meets the Advanced Nursing Practice or Physician’s Assistant requirements set forth by the Texas State Board of Nursing or the Texas Medical Licensure Board. Must possess appropriate certification and degree from a United States Institution of Higher Education. Must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Texas prior to beginning employment.

Experience

Required

At least two years experience in a medical practice preferred. Applicant may not have any unresolved malpractice suits pending against him/her and shall not have any unresolved complaints on file in any state where he/she has license to practice medicine. Computer literacy required.

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices and regulations to give and evaluate patient care.
  • Knowledge of how to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish/maintain a safe work environment.
Skills
  • Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care.
  • Skill in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
Abilities
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
Environmental/Working Conditions

Combination of exam rooms and medical offices. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

Physical/Mental Demands

Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 10 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stress in emergency situations and irregular hours.
