Position: FT Faculty - English Instructor

Big Bend Community College (BBCC), a rural college serving vibrant, culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington, invites applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track English Instructor. This position is part of the four‑person English Department, housed in the Humanities Division. The teaching load will include primarily English Composition I and II, with options for other English or Humanities courses.

We seek faculty dedicated to creating supportive, inclusive learning environments and who value the success of all students. The anticipated start date is September 14, 2026.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Prepare and teach English Composition and other English courses; duties may include day, evening, hybrid, and online classes.
  • Provide regular and predictable access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.
  • Instruct, assist, and motivate students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and substantive feedback on assignments and discussions.
  • Advise students; assist in planning their educational program, selecting courses, and, when necessary, refer them to appropriate student services.
  • Participate as an active member of working committees dealing with instruction, college‑wide and department assessment, student matters, and/or college‑related concerns.
  • Represent and advocate for the English Department and Humanities Division at campus‑wide meetings.
  • Work effectively with colleagues and students of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and be a positive contributing member of the campus community.
  • Provide advice and support for English associate (adjunct) faculty in conjunction with the department.
  • Maintain effective communication with students, faculty, administration, and staff.
  • Foster a flexible, healthy learning environment that is responsive to the diverse needs of students.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth, development, and conduct.
  • Perform other duties as agreed with the division chair or administrator.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Rhetoric and Composition, English, Writing, or another closely related field with adequate graduate‑level English coursework.
  • Prior successful teaching experience at the post‑secondary level (community college, university, or dual enrollment).
  • Experience with online learning, hybrid courses, and learning management systems (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.) that incorporate regular and substantive interaction.
  • Experience supporting and engaging individuals with diverse academic, cultural, socioeconomic, age, ability, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Additional Desirable Qualifications
    • Ability to teach other courses in English or Humanities fields.
    • English/Composition teaching experience at the community college level.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of the role of the community college in education.
    • Experience implementing innovative teaching methods to improve student success and retention, such as flipped instruction, coordinated studies, team teaching, active learning, or computer‑aided instruction.
