Clinical Faculty - Theatre - Music Director/Accompanist
The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Idaho invites applications for a full-time, Clinical Assistant Professor of Theatre-Music Director/Accompanist. This non-tenure track position will begin Fall 2026 with a 3/4 teaching load. This position plays a central role in supporting the department’s production season and teaching mission, overseeing the musical elements of assigned productions—including musical and plays with music—and providing musical instruction and accompaniment for both curricular and production needs.
The Music Director/Accompanist will teach assigned courses in music and theatre performance, serve as an accompanist for departmental classes and rehearsals, and collaborate with faculty and staff across the Department of Theatre and the Lionel Hampton School of Music.
Primary Responsibilities:- Serve as Music Director and/or Accompanist for productions involving music, including musical, plays with music, or devised works.
- Oversee musical auditions, assess student abilities, and support vocal development.
- Collaborate closely with directors, choreographers, designers, and faculty to realize the musical vision of departmental productions.
- Conduct musical rehearsals and provide piano accompaniment for rehearsals, auditions, and classroom instruction.
- Teach courses in vocal performance, musical theatre, and/or musical theory as assigned by the Department Chair.
- Mentor undergraduate students in musical performance and related areas.
- Coordinate with the Lionel Hampton School of Music to support interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Participate in student recruitment, outreach, and other departmental service.
- Contribute to ongoing creative activity in support of the production season.
- Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
- Must be able to teach in-person on the University of Idaho’s Moscow campus.
- Familiarity with collaborative teaching and interdisciplinary instruction is preferred.
Required qualifications are required at time of hire.
Required Qualifications- Master of Music in Vocal Conducting or closely related field.
- Experience as a music director, choral conductor, and piano accompanist.
- Experience playing piano at the professional level, suitable for rehearsal and performance settings.
- Experience in musical theatre and understanding of acting and singing principles in a theatrical context.
- Collegiate and/or professional acting experience.
- Strong score‑reading and interpretation abilities.
- Proficiency in music theory adequate to teach at the undergraduate level.
- Effective communication skills in rehearsal and instructional settings.
- Experience working in interdisciplinary or collaborative performance environments.
