Lead Computational Toxicology Research Scientist – Job Description
We have an exciting opportunity for a Lead Computational Toxicology Research Scientist at UL Research Institutes' Chemical Insights Research Institute, based in our Research Triangle Park, NC facilities. The Lead Computational Toxicology Research Scientist conducts advanced computational research to support the Underwriters Laboratories Research Institutes’ Chemical Insights mission to provide unbiased research on chemicals and their risks to people's health. This role focuses on building computational models that integrate, analyze, and interpret in vitro and in vivo toxicological data to assess potential human hazards and health risks.
The Lead Computational Toxicology Research Scientist works closely with other internal scientists and external collaborators to deliver high-quality scientific outputs that inform chemical safety, risk assessment, regulatory policy, and public awareness.

As the Lead Computational Toxicology Research Scientist, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:
- Design and execute computational toxicology studies aligned with ULRI’s Chemical Insights mission for understanding chemical safety.
- Develop and apply advanced computational toxicology methods that analyze, integrate, and interpret complex in vitro and in vivo toxicological and toxicokinetic data sets. Translate these in vitro screening data and toxicokinetic information into useful information for understanding systemic and targeted toxicities posed by chemical exposure.
- Apply and deepen knowledge of exploratory data analysis, statistics, machine learning to provide impactful analysis of data from new approach methods.
- Lead the development and application of data pipelines for targeted screening data and collaborate with other computational scientists on data pipelines for broad profiling data from transcriptomic and high content imaging experiments.
- Collaborate with cheminformatic and exposure scientists to help select chemicals for additional characterization, develop quantitative structure activity relationship models, and other cross-disciplinary tasks.
- Oversee extraction, curation, and quality evaluation of unstructured and structured data from in vivo toxicological studies, and help maintain reference databases of in vivo toxicological studies from diverse regulatory and non-regulatory sources.
- Collaborate with software developers and data engineers to incorporate in vitro and in vivo toxicological data sets into on-line dashboards and decision support tools.
- Collaborate with chemists, toxicologists, exposure scientists, statisticians, and other multidisciplinary team members to utilize in vitro toxicological data for chemical safety assessments.
