Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plans, coordinates, and directs the maintenance, operations, and repair of wastewater collection systems including pump stations, solids and floatables facilities, sewer and catch basin cleaning, vehicles, and other components.
  • Familiar with operations of a combined sewer system, managing combined sewer overflows (CSO’s), and reporting to NJDEP.
  • Supervises field and shop operations, and coordinates field work with other departments.
  • Manages the CMMS system to ensure work is completed on time and maintenance activities are properly documented.
  • Prepares comprehensive progress and work reports and time and cost reports as required.
  • Consults with subordinates on matters of workloads, requests, records and reports, and priority assignments; develops work programs and budget estimates for the department.
  • Plans, assigns, supervises, and evaluates staff; assists with the hiring and training of new employees.
  • Requisition s material, tools, equipment, and contractors as needed; supervises contractors and crews; reviews and approves invoices for payment.
  • Establishes safety precautions against occupational hazards and understands traffic control measures for field work.
  • Receives and investigates complaints and requests from the public regarding sewer service; diagnoses operating problems and directs effective corrective procedures.
  • Performs inspections of stormwater detention systems and FOG (Fats, Oils, and Grease) systems.
  • Performs emergency response duties as necessary, including communications with customers and public agencies.
  • Familiar with CCTV inspections and reporting, and sewer improvement projects.
  • Prepares monthly projects for outside contractors for repair of manholes, catch basins, and other horizontal assets in the collection system.
  • Reviews and prepares monthly payment applications submitted by contractors for repairs performed in the collection system.
  • Submits monthly DMRs reporting CSO activity in the combined sewer system.
  • Responds to concerns raised by local officials and directs on‑call personnel during work hours and after hours, including weekends.
  • Assists in reviewing applications for new sewer connections; inspects installation of new sewer connections and stormwater retention systems.
  • Coordinates the inclusion of new information into GIS mapping, including new construction of collection system facilities and updated data from CCTV inspection videos.
  • Prepares monthly collection system activity reports for the Authority’s board meetings, including responses to customer concerns and progress on sewer main and catch basin cleaning.
Working Conditions

Here’s What You’ll Need
  • Level 4 NJDEP Wastewater Collections System Operator License (or ability to obtain within 1 year).
  • 5–7 years of experience in the construction, maintenance, and operation of collections and distribution systems.
  • New Jersey Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
Ideally, Here’s What You Will Also Have
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Excellent ability to multi‑task, provide timely responses, and coordinate field work.
  • PACP Certification (or ability to obtain within 1 year).
  • Understanding of ArcGIS and data management.
  • Basic electrical/mechanical knowledge related to pumps, motors, pump station controls, SCADA, and high‑velocity sewer cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices, supervisory training, budget preparation, expenditure control, and federal and state laws pertaining to the water/wastewater industry.
