The department of Facilities & Services at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Electrician II.

About the Opportunity

Under the supervision of the Operations Manager and Electrician II, performs both installation of new construction and general maintenance of existing facilities utilizing journeyman level electrical skills. Shall also provide guidance to Maintenance Workers and unskilled personnel as assigned.

What you'll do
  • Installs, repairs, and inspects electrical distribution equipment and wiring both inside and outside buildings to verify capacities.
  • Installs and maintains circuit breakers, sub‑station switch gear, and transformers.
  • Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots 23 kv and 5 kv underground power distribution circuits; pulls high‑voltage cables through underground ducts and cable trays in steam tunnels.
  • Splices and terminates high‑voltage cable using current state‑of‑the‑art (3M) materials and methods.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and inspects wires and auxiliary equipment, such as fuses, insulators, and switches.
  • Installs and maintains fire alarms, emergency lighting, generator transfer switches, and related life‑safety equipment.
  • Installs and maintains all control systems for motors, lights, heat, and air controls.
  • Designs routing plans and installs new electrical conduit, tubing, wiremold, raceway, and accessories; requires pipe‑fitting ability.
  • Installs and maintains lighting systems for interior, exterior, street lights, and parking lots.
  • Utilizes bucket truck and power scaffolding to install and maintain lighting and power distribution systems.
  • Installs, maintains, tests, repairs, and adjusts laboratory, laundry, kitchen, and other equipment within the university setting.
  • Participates in the installation of simple electronic control systems and clock systems.
  • Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal building codes.
  • Maintains an organized work area for safety and security of materials.
  • Coordinates the return of unnecessary materials to the warehouse.
  • Operates vehicles requiring a valid driver’s license.
  • Might perform general maintenance duties or assist other trades (e.g., lighting, sheet metal, painting, carpentry, plumbing, millwright).
  • Might move, load, and carry all materials necessary for projects; must respond during off‑hours for emergencies.
  • Might operate computers with FM Maintenance Management and other software.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including early morning hours.

Pay Grade: 14

Hours:

7 am – 3 pm

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One of the following:
    • 2 years of electrical experience.
    • Associate’s degree as an electrical technician.
    • Completion of a 2‑year accredited vocational electrical program.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to work off‑hour schedules to de‑energize equipment for testing and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, local, state, and federal electrical and building codes.
  • Ability to read blueprints, perform mathematical computations, and operate a personal computer.
  • Knowledge of warehousing functions.
  • Ability to work with people in a stressful environment.
  • Ability to hear and interpret sounds and verbal instructions.
  • Logical problem‑solving techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of technical terms related to electricity and project management.
  • Ability to perform all assigned electrical tasks.
  • Ability to collaborate with multi‑craft personnel.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • High work standards.
Physical Demands
  • Daily walking, carrying, standing, crawling, climbing, stooping, climbing heights over ten feet, and lifting materials over 50 pounds.
Requirements
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Valid WV state electrical license (Journeyman) preferred.
