Job Description Summary

Performs a variety of duties to provide assistance and information to all patients, visitors, and staff. Enforces WVUH policies and procedures to provide a safe, secure environment in support of the WVUH Security Program.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent AND 3 years of experience in the security field.
  • Associate’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law, or a related field of study AND 1 year of experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law, or a related field of study AND 6 months of experience in the security field.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must attain TASER user certification within one year.
  • Valid Driver’s License required and must be maintained during employment.
  • Completion of training requirements for an armed security officer required.
  • Meet all ACT 235 training certification requirements, including psychological evaluation physical, and coursework completed within 60 days of hire; maintenance during employment required.
  • Satisfactory completion of all departmental Lethal Weapon Training and coursework required within one year of hire.
  • Obtain Heart Saver First Aid certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Successfully pass WV DHHR Protected Services Record Check and WV CARES fingerprint‑based criminal background check.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Initiates positive customer service interactions and provides assistance to hospital patients, visitors, and staff, facilitating orderly access to WVUH facilities in accordance with WVUH and departmental policies.
  • Maintains consistent visibility and presence at assigned locations to provide an informational and directional resource for all patients, visitors, and staff 100% of the time.
  • Responds to all patient, visitor, and staff requests for information or assistance in a caring, courteous manner 100% of the time.
  • Provides physical assistance, wheelchair assistance, transport services, escort services, and room access for patients, visitors, and staff accessing WVUH facilities.
  • Monitors and maintains traffic flow in WVUH parking areas and roadways, assisting disabled vehicles, issuing parking permits, and warning violations.
  • Protects people and property by assisting in the prevention of accidents, theft, and vandalism in accordance with WVUH and department policies, as monitored by supervision.
  • Responds to unusual or emergency situations using the appropriate escalation of force level up to and including armed response following established protocol.
  • Maintains consistent presence and visibility by performing routine building rounds, building door unlocks, exterior building, and parking lot patrol.
  • Makes recommendations to management, staff, visitors, and patients to improve security and prevent accidents and crime.
  • Reports suspicious situations, circumstances, incidents, and persons in accordance with WVUH and department policy.
  • Responds and provides assistance during fire and disaster drills, animal control issues, transportation of valuables, and lost/found issues.
  • Provides written documentation of activities, incidents, premises safety, accidents, theft, vandalism, and other data requested by supervision in a factual, objective, and legible manner.
  • Responds to emergencies such as assaults, domestic disputes, fire, vandalism, bomb threats, theft, vehicle accidents, disasters, etc.
  • Performs patient restraint as directed by clinical staff and is capable of physical intervention when appropriate.
  • Operates hospital‑owned vehicles safely and responsibly 100% of the time.
  • Ensures safety and proper operating condition of vehicles by performing inspections as outlined by departmental policy.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for the entire shift and/or double shift.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull 80 pounds.
  • Ability to tolerate adverse environmental conditions for the entire shift and/or double shift.
