About the Opportunity

The department of Facilities & Services at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Maintenance Worker II. This position works within both the Facilities Management Operations and Facilities Management Maintenance Departments to assist in the general maintenance and up‑keep of institutional buildings. Each shift will be divided between the two departments to aid in the daily cleaning and maintenance of a group of buildings.

What You’ll Do
  • Assist various crafts with preventative maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Assist and work under the direction of a Trades Specialist Lead II in all aspects of skilled work, including carpentry, tiles, drywall, piping modifications, basic plumbing, and basic electrical repairs on non‑live circuits.
  • Assist in the installation of new and modification of existing piping and equipment, including cleaning and soldering fittings.
  • Assist in electrical operations involving installation of conduit, sub‑panel boxes, switches, circuit breakers, fixtures, and accessories; pull electric wires through conduit.
  • Assist in general painting duties such as painting walls, ceilings, trim, and furniture with enamel/latex paints; prepare surfaces, patch and finish drywall.
  • Ensure proper safety procedures, equipment, and personal protective equipment are used.
  • Complete requisitions for parts and supplies as needed.
  • Receive work orders and interface with lead, supervisor, and managers; communicate work schedules and issues to accommodate timely, quality maintenance.
  • Clean and maintain interior appearance of assigned buildings (classrooms, offices, laboratories, student housing, public areas): sweeping, mopping, waxing floors; vacuuming and shampooing carpets; dusting, polishing furniture; washing walls, ceilings, doors, windows; other related cleaning activities.
  • Clean and disinfect public bathrooms, replenish supplies.
  • Operate walk‑behind and riding scrubbers, high‑speed buffers, automated carpet cleaners, power lifts, and other equipment.
  • Operate equipment such as brooms, mops, vacuums; calculate area for cleaning solutions; follow safety procedures; lock/unlock doors.
  • Move equipment, chairs, tables across floors using dollies, carts, elevators, or stairways.
  • Clean lobby, elevator, hallway areas; maintain common area washer/dryer areas; check dryer filters.
  • Maintain exterior appearance of all buildings: raking, removing debris, sweeping, shoveling, removing snow and ice, spreading salt, washing graffiti, operating blowers and sweepers; remove weeds from shrub and flowerbeds.
  • Collect and dispose trash and litter; clean trash receptacles; assist sanitation vehicle operators; collect recyclables.
  • Maintain clean work area and perform duties required by supervisor.
  • May operate computers and various software programs.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • At least one (1) year of experience with commercial/residential cleaning and general trades maintenance.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of building trades.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of custodial methods, procedures, and safety principles.
  • Ability to operate a computer.
  • Ability to follow OSHA guidelines and associated codes.
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools, parts, and materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain average or above work standards.
  • Ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to learn policies and procedures quickly.
