Overview

The Clinical Monitoring Technician plays a key role in supporting the safe and efficient use of cardiac monitoring equipment throughout the hospital. This position is responsible for assisting with the delivery, retrieval, and basic setup of telemetry equipment and related supplies, and for escorting patients on telemetry monitors to and from designated clinical areas. Working under the supervision and direction of clinical and monitoring teams, the technician ensures equipment is handled safely and used appropriately, while maintaining communication with nursing staff and equipment services.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Certification, And/Or License

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Obtain certification in Heart Saver OR Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date

To be completed as established by department: (Administered at Department level)

  • Complete LIFT General Staff Training within 30 days of hire date
  • Complete the assigned dysrhythmia course(s) within 60 days of hire date
Preferred Qualifications

Education, Certification, And/Or Licensure

  • Experience in hospital, patient transport, telemetry, or inventory management roles

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Escorts patients on telemetry monitors to and from diagnostic and procedural areas, under the direction of clinical staff, ensuring monitoring continuity and patient safety.
  • Verifies patient identity and confirms functional status of monitoring equipment prior to movement, reporting concerns to the assigned nurse or monitoring tech.
  • Observes monitoring equipment connections during transport and promptly notifies appropriate clinical staff of any changes in patient condition or device function.
  • Secures telemetry packs, oxygen tanks, and related supplies during movement, ensuring safe handling in accordance with infection prevention and safety guidelines.
  • Assists with appropriate lead placement and telemetry setup on patients as directed by clinical staff, ensuring proper attachment and secure connections.
  • Maintains awareness of monitoring equipment status during movement and follows emergency response protocols by alerting appropriate staff immediately if concerns arise.
  • Notifies the responsible nurse when the patient has returned from diagnostic testing or clinical procedures
  • Follows department processes for tracking the use, distribution, and retrieval of telemetry equipment, documenting activity as directed.
  • Informs appropriate personnel of missing, broken, or malfunctioning equipment and coordinates with Biomedical Engineering for resolution.
  • Reports broken, missing, or malfunctioning telemetry equipment or accessories to the appropriate department (e.g., Biomedical Engineering or Central Monitoring).
  • Follows infection prevention procedures when handling equipment or entering patient care spaces.
  • Maintains organization and cleanliness of equipment staging areas and storage zones.
  • Responds professionally and promptly to unit and departmental requests.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, dependability, and collaboration in a dynamic hospital setting.
