Overview

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) possesses coordination and clinical skills required for comprehensive management of critical care medicine patients, including biological, social, and psychological assessments. The APP coordinates medical/surgical specialty teams, reviews the care plan, participates in directing that care, adheres to protocol requirements and regulatory guidelines, performs diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, peri‑procedural services, and coordinates discharge planning to the next level of care.

The APP will participate in the education of residents and medical/nursing students and will respond to rapid response alerts, assessing and initiating care for the critically ill patient in the activation.

Responsibilities
  • Manages comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families in inpatient/critical care settings, including immediate post‑transfer to step‑down, ward, or discharge.
  • Completes daily rounds; consults and/or pre‑procedure/evaluations and integrated assessments.
  • Orders additional tests or consults as deemed appropriate, follows established clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Facilitates patient discharge or transfer by coordinating appropriate services and follow‑up tests.
  • Develops comprehensive individualized plans of care, including teaching, discharge or transfer planning, and necessary referrals.
  • Identifies unstable or complex critical‑care patient situations and facilitates appropriate intervention.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making.
  • Provides educational programs to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families and the community.
  • Participates in community programs, literature distribution, and professional committees.
  • Documents plan of care, interventions, and evaluations in a clear and concise manner for every patient visit, following approved hospital and compliance standards for documentation.
  • Collaborates with staff to achieve patient outcome‑based improvements and lead changes in critical‑care practice.
  • Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate creative problem solving and provide professional support.
  • Assists in collection of outcome measures and participates in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for Nurse Practitioner (NP)

  • Graduate from a CCNE accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
  • National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
  • Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or a multi‑state RN license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) and an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license issued by the West Virginia Board of Nursing.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
  • Eligible new graduates will be considered.

Minimum Qualifications for Physician Assistant (PA)

  • Bachelor’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant required.
  • Graduate of an ARC‑PA approved Physician Assistant training program required.
  • Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required.
  • Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
  • Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant preferred.
  • Critical care or critical care experience preferred.
  • Eligible new graduates will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Acute care or critical care experience preferred.
