Position Summary:
This Clinical Associate will perform direct and indirect patient care activities under the supervision of a registered professional nurse, providing high‑quality, cost‑effective care by performing delegated tasks and proactively interacting with patients, families, and other customers.
- Assist direct patient care: provide basic physical care to promote patient comfort as directed by the Registered Nurse.
- Assist all assigned patients with activities of daily living, including making beds.
- Safely transport patients according to WVUH’s Safe Patient Handling Policy and escort them for discharge.
- Transport specimens and items throughout the facility.
- Perform assigned tests such as glucose monitoring, urine and stool testing, and maintain quality control logs per department policy.
- Perform routine phlebotomy services, excluding line draws, in departments determined by management.
- Obtain and record assigned patient vital signs, intake/output, weight, and abdominal girth per departmental policy.
- Provide respiratory support by setting up oxygen equipment and encouraging incentive spirometer use.
- Observe and report all patient concerns or changes in condition to a registered nurse immediately.
- Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures per departmental procedure.
- Assist physicians and registered nurses with examinations and procedures.
- Assist with basic rehab/physical therapy activities, e.g., active and passive range of motion and ambulation.
- Communicate with RN regarding any nutrition issues.
- Provide total care within scope of practice when assigned sitter or visual responsibilities.
- Assist in indirect patient care by maintaining a clean and safe environment to prevent and control infections.
- Maintain assigned unit equipment per departmental procedures and report repairs timely.
- Assist in routine unit operations to assure smooth communication and functioning of the unit.
- Answer telephone promptly and courteously, identify self and unit at all times.
- Relays accurate telephone, visitor and patient messages to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Promptly complete errands as requested.
- Limited access to medications; UAP may transport non‑controlled substances upon request.
- Remove out‑of‑date items.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support or Heart Saver First Aid within 30 days of hire.
- Prior patient care experience.
- Work requires lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, and walking; handle equipment up to 50 pounds and push/pull carts up to 200 pounds.
- Use lift equipment or patient handling aids; manual lifting limited to 35 pounds.
- Must be able to sit, walk, or stand for prolonged periods.
Work occurs in a dynamic healthcare environment loyees encounter patient care duties, equipment handling, and must adhere to safety and infection control practices.
Skills & Abilities- Competency in Safe Patient Handling equipment.
- Excellent communication skills and strong customer service orientation.
- Ability to handle simultaneous multiple demands.
- Good time‑management skills.
- 36 hours per week.
- Day shift (United States).
