This position is eligible for a $20,000 Sign-On Bonus with 3+ years of OR nursing experience.

Position summary

The Lead OR Board Runner Registered Nurse collects and analyzes patient data, formulates plans of care, determines progress toward attainment of outcomes, coordinates the delivery of care, promotes a safe practice environment, and advocates mutual respect with patients, families, employees, and other healthcare providers. The Lead OR Board Runner Registered Nurse role ensures that surgical operations flow efficiently by managing the “board” (live surgery schedule) and serving as the primary liaison between surgeons, anesthesia, and nursing staff.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Performs all nursing skills and procedures according to established criteria of competent practice as defined by the Kentucky Board of Nursing. Utilizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and evidence-based practices.
  • Provides appropriate age and developmental care in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Integrates ethical provisions in nursing practice and delivers care in a manner that preserves and respects the privacy, confidentiality, and diversity of patients and families.
  • Maintains a safe environment, including proper use and storage of equipment and ensuring a hazard-free patient area.
  • Maintains thorough documentation for maintaining patient safety, effective communication, and meeting legal and regulatory standards.
  • Delegates tasks appropriately to other personnel.
  • Assesses learning needs and provides tailored education to the patient/family related to care, treatment, and potential risks relevant to the patient. Ensure a comprehensive understanding and document accordingly.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Communicates with PRE/POST leads to ensure patient readiness, changes in schedule, concerns.
  • Schedule and flow management: monitor the daily surgical schedule in real-time, assigning staff to specific rooms and coordinating room turnover to minimize delays.
  • Operational liaison: acts as the central point of communication for surgeons and anesthesia providers, addressing urgent requests and relocating resources as surgical needs shift.
  • Staff coordination: managing staff labor and assignments, providing input on performance evaluations and assisting with orientation or training new team members.
  • Resource allocation: ensure that necessary sterile instruments, equipment, and specialty supplies are available for each procedure.
  • Clinical leadership: intervene in emergency situations, provide clinical expertise to solve complex intraoperative issues and ensure compliance with AORN standards and hospital policies.
  • Administrative oversight: assist with admission and discharge processes to ensure efficient patient throughput and high-quality care.
  • Provides education and corrective feedback for staff.
  • Audits charts for correct documentation and charges.
  • Assist with being a validator of competencies for OR staff and performs check offs.
  • Collaborates with the Lead OR Coordinator Nurse, preference card administrator, PRE & POST staff, and surgery schedulers.
  • Adheres to surgery department policies.
  • Will assist with patient positioning, site prep, breaks, lunches, etc. as needed.
  • Will assist with audits for quality improvements.
  • Will assist with overseeing the tissue management processes.
  • Perform routine checks and complete logs as assigned (e.g., Malignant Hyperthermia Cart).
Education

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required. Bachelor Degree in Nursing (BSN) or Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) preferred.

Experience

Previous OR experience preferred.

Licensure/Certification

Valid Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN) License.
