The mission of the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) is to improve the quality of life for all Kentuckians by protecting land, air, and water resources and supporting innovative, resilient, and sustainable energy solutions. As an Environmental Scientist III in the Division of Water, Drinking Water Branch, Technical Assistance Section, you will assist public water systems (PWS) in achieving and maintaining compliance with State and Federal regulations.
Responsibilities- Serve as the Area-Wide Optimization Program (AWOP) point of contact for assigned regions.
- Represent the Kentucky Division of Water in meetings with government officials, public water systems, and the general public.
- Oversee sanitary survey report communication with public water systems, tracking responses and compliance for assigned regions.
- Provide presentations at training and professional conferences.
- Train agency staff and public water system operators.
- Knowledge of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
- Critical thinking and problem‑solving abilities.
- Data analysis, presentation, and organizational skills.
- Self‑motivated and comfortable working independently, with the ability to work in a team environment.
Work is typically performed in an office setting, with frequent statewide field travel. Incumbents may encounter adverse weather, exposure to snakes and insects, water‑borne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal in streams, and hazards related to electro‑fishing equipment. The agency may authorize the selected candidate to telecommute; the arrangement may be terminated or modified at any time.
EEC participates in E‑Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I‑9 information to confirm U.S. work authorization. E‑Verify will be used only after a job offer is accepted and Form I‑9 is completed.
Minimum Requirements- Education
:
Bachelor’s degree in a natural, biological, or physical science, or a bachelor’s degree supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological, or physical science. - Experience, Training, or Skills
:
Three years of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area. - Substitutions
:
Graduate study in a natural, biological, or physical science will substitute for the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis; experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering, or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis. - Special Requirements
:
None.

Probationary PeriodThis position has an initial and promotional probationary period of six months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
