The Paramedic functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team providing direct patient care. The Paramedic performs a variety of activities across various practices settings and patient populations in accordance with the Paramedic scope of practice as defined by the North Carolina Medical Board and with the approval of the practice setting Medical Director.
Work PerformedResponsibilities include providing direct patient care in accordance with the Paramedic scope of practice under medical oversight of the Medical Director; assisting clinical staff in evaluation, treatment and care of patients; obtaining pertinent history and performing physical examinations; performing technical procedures as delegated; monitoring patients and maintaining records using patient monitoring systems and electronic health records; documenting patient status and response to care;
communicating essential information to the healthcare team; operating medical equipment in hospital and transport environments; ensuring equipment is functioning and restocking supplies; providing a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff; proper handling and disposal of sharps and soiled materials; using PPE appropriately; acting as a preceptor and supporting staff development; participating in performance improvement initiatives; maintaining certifications and clinical skills;
and performing other related duties.
Complete vehicle inspections and road tests; minor repairs to the vehicle; daily maintenance including fueling and cleaning; assist with patient care on transports; provide direct patient care on ALS I, ALS II or BLS transports within the defined scope; replenish oxygen and medical supplies; demonstrate safe driving and use of technology; provide staffing coverage; assist Duke units as needed.
Level III - Life Flight Critical Care ParamedicPerform all Level II responsibilities and additional advanced clinical tasks in critical care transport; obtain comprehensive history and perform rapid primary and secondary assessments; analyze diagnostic data and adjust plan of care; provide care in a critical care environment per program protocols; utilize advanced life support equipment; maintain communication with Medical Control and team; coordinate care across referring and receiving professionals;
plan and maintain equipment for transport; perform inventories; manage special equipment needs; perform intubations, RSI, needle decompression, cricothyroidotomy, central line placement, intraosseous line placement; ensure a safe environment for crew and patients; participate in research as needed.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of Paramedic scope of practice and professional standards
- Ability to assess needs of acute and chronically ill patients and families
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate clearly with the healthcare team
- Ability to process and prioritize information; strong cognitive and sensory skills
- Fine motor skills and documentation proficiency (electronic or paper)
- Ability to withstand prolonged standing/walking; maintain focus and organization
- Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions
- Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing required;
English proficiency - Commitment to ongoing professional development
Same knowledge and abilities as Level II and Level III with incremental clinical expectations and required certifications (see Minimum Qualifications). Operating knowledge of ambulance vehicles; physical requirements including lifting up to 75 pounds; vision and hearing requirements; post-offer fitness testing; ability to wear a Duke-approved helmet; weight and height limits per policy; transport environment conditions.
