Position Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Buyer with a strong background in the automotive industry. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successfully sourcing, negotiating, and procuring materials, components, and services while ensuring compliance with regulations and quality standards. This role requires a deep understanding of automotive supply chains and a keen ability to adapt those insights to the unique demands of the defense sector.

The position will be interface with our Engineering and Sales groups, and our Supply base to secure best market price, highest quality product and on time delivery for all corporate procurement.

The Buyer will report to the Supply Chain Manager. The position requires a full-time work week spent in the office. Normal hours are Monday through Thursday 7:00am‑4:30pm and Friday 7:00am – 12:00pm. Position may require occasional out of office time to visit a vendor office or production facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand procurement requirements for defense projects that involve automotive technologies and components.
  • Utilize automotive industry knowledge to identify potential suppliers, evaluate their capabilities, and establish strong working relationships.
  • Source and procure materials, components, and services in accordance with project specifications, quality standards, budget constraints, and delivery timelines.
  • Conduct thorough market research to stay updated on automotive trends, technologies, and supply chain dynamics, and apply these insights to defense procurement strategies.
  • Lead negotiations with suppliers to secure favorable terms, pricing, and contractual agreements, while considering long‑term partnerships.
  • Assess and mitigate risks associated with supplier selection, lead times, quality, and geopolitical factors that may impact the supply chain.
  • Collaborate with the quality assurance team to ensure that procured items meet the required specifications and performance standards.
  • Monitor supplier performance, track key performance indicators (KPIs), and address any deviations from established benchmarks.
  • Stay informed about relevant regulations, export controls, and compliance requirements within the defense industry, ensuring procurement activities adhere to all applicable laws.
  • Maintain accurate records of procurement activities, supplier contracts, and negotiations.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimize procurement processes, reduce costs, and enhance overall supply chain efficiency.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings to provide input on procurement strategies, project timelines, and potential challenges related to automotive integration in defense applications.
Skills and Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field preferred; or equivalent work experience. Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Proven experience as a Buyer or Procurement Specialist in the automotive industry, with a strong understanding of automotive supply chains, technologies, and market trends highly advantageous.
  • Familiarity with defense industry procurement processes, regulations, and compliance standards.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex data, make informed decisions, and solve problems effectively.
  • Proficiency in procurement software and tools.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well within cross-functional teams and manage multiple priorities.
  • ERP system or accounting software experience required.
  • Knowledge of machining practices, industry workings, fabrication shop procedures strongly preferred.
  • Must be able to verify U.S. Person Status as defined by International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
  • Ability to obtain security clearance if deemed necessary for position.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization's facilities.
