Urban Policy and Governance Specialist
- Master’s degree in Economics, International Development, Political Sciences, Geography, Urban Planning, Sustainable Development or related areas (a first‑level degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree).
- Minimum 2 years of experience in urban policy and governance.
- Ability to simplify complex information for diverse audiences.
- Strong report writing and review skills.
- Progressively responsible work experience in sustainable urbanization (desirable).
- Experience in the UN system (desirable).
- Fluency in English (spoken and written) required; proficiency/fluency in French is highly desirable.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‑Habitat) is the UN agency mandated to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. The newly established Montreal Office focuses on fostering linkages among research, policy, and action to accelerate sustainable urban development.
Responsibilities- Conduct policy research and analysis on sustainable urbanization issues, providing evidence‑based inputs.
- Prepare technical documents (briefings, concept notes, and technical notes) on urban policy under the guidance of Montreal Office staff.
- Coordinate closely with UN‑Habitat’s North America and other relevant offices to ensure consistency and maximize synergies.
- Support convenings of multiple partners, experts, and stakeholders, including reporting and documentation.
- Analyze existing norms, standards, methodologies, and regulatory frameworks related to sustainable urban development.
- Contribute to resource mobilization activities when required.
- Submit monthly activity reports detailing progress and tasks completed.
- Provide general support to the office, including participation in meetings and events as requested.
- Must be legally permitted to work in Canada (i.e., Canadian resident or citizen).
- Visualize urban and architecture diagrams as needed.
- Stay updated on workshops, design tools, and calls for collaboration.
