Overview

Oversee program administrative needs including:

  • Supervision of staff including developing performance evaluations and work plans
  • Establish program priorities through strategic and operational planning
  • Develop and oversee budgets associated with grants
  • Develop, review, and oversee administration of state and federal grants that support the work of the program
  • Oversee and review development of long range management plans for state land
  • Coordinate and lead an inter-department state lands team
  • Participate on the wildlife division administration team with other program managers and division director
  • Review and provide input into state and federal statutes, rules, and policies that affect public land
  • Develop and review reports describing results of program accomplishments
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on program accomplishments, issues, challenges, and needs to a wide range of audiences including legislative committees, department and agency leadership, fish and wildlife board, and the public

This position is expected to work independently and at a high level of competence in collaboration with the Division Director and other program managers. The position requires a deep knowledge of public land management policy and management with experience performing the applied, on-the-ground work. This position coordinates and collaborates with a wide range of partner organizations including U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service, other state agencies, and numerous non-government organizations such as The Nature Conservancy, Vermont Land Trust, Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation, Audubon, among others.

In particular, this position is expected to work directly with program managers from the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation on all matters pertaining to state land management, administration and policy. Provide a high level of expertise to guide and direct staff responsible for implementing management activities on Wildlife Management Areas and other public land.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed primarily in a standard office setting. Occasional field work and attendance at public meetings require that private means of transportation be available. Some work outside of normal office hours may be required. Interaction may be anticipated with individuals and groups expressing strong dissent from and hostility to Department programs and policies.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree or higher in a scientific or natural resources field AND three (3) years of experience in a fish or wildlife management program, INCLUDING one (1) year or more of administrative or supervisory responsibilities.

OR

Bachelor's degree in a scientific or natural resources field AND five (5) years of experience in a fish or wildlife management program, INCLUDING one (1) year or more of administrative or supervisory responsibilities.
