Job Summary

The YST Apprentice works in numerous areas of the company learning how each department interacts within the company. The Apprentice may shadow in the departments of Engineering, Programing, Machining, Finishing, Quality, Maintenance and Sales. Learning machines, systems, and processes within each area. Observes and/or performs hands on work based on mentor’s comfort level on apprentice’s comprehension of safety, quality, and demonstrated good work ethics to perform tasks.

Responsibilities
  • Assist experienced machinists in setting up and operating CNC machines (mills, MT, Swiss, EDM and lathes).
  • Measure finished parts using precision tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
  • Read and interpret basic blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions.
  • Maintain clean and organized workstations following shop safety procedures.
  • Inspect parts and report defects or inconsistencies to senior machinists.
  • Support preventative maintenance and routine machine cleaning.
  • Document production data and inspection results.
  • Follow all company safety policies and manufacturing standards.
  • Performs assigned tasks from mentor safely with good quality ratings and reasonable productivity output
  • Good communication with Training Specialist on current grades, work status, and scheduling conflicts with school, activities, and work
Requirements

Education and Experience

  • A current student of an accredited school maintaining good academic standing
  • Displays strong mechanical aptitude, cultural adeptness, willingness to learn/grow within the company, long term commitment to a career in machine trades

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged standing with occasional twisting (80-90% of the workday)
  • Various sitting periods throughout the shift
  • Frequent lifting of materials up to 30 lbs., occasional lifting up to 70 lbs.
  • Pushing/pulling carts and/or pallet jacks
  • Dexterity - with computers, ability to type, use of mouse, at a computer
  • Continuous use of hands and upper extremities in fine and gross manipulation using various wrist positions and grip/pinch spans to operate equipment, push buttons, carry boxes, push carts, etc.
  • Frequent firm grip with tools requiring torque to tighten machine parts, tooling, and fixtures
  • Dexterity - with computers, ability to type, use of mouse, at a computer
  • Must be able to meet customer demand requirements for performing visual inspection and/or other product acceptance activities with or without accommodation (only for positions in which this is a requirement of the job per the customer requirement)

Salary Description $17.50-$18.50/HR
