  • Part Time days (48 hours bi-weekly)
  • 6:30am - 7:00pm
  • Every 3rd weekend rotation
  • Holiday rotation
Unit Overview

The 8300 Medical-Surgical Oncology Unit at Tri Health Bethesda North Hospital is a 44‑bed unit that cares for a diverse patient population with medical‑surgical needs including cardiothoracic, abdominal, vascular, gastrointestinal, women’s health, surgeries and surgical oncology patients. Our unit provides a supportive learning environment for both new graduates and experienced nurses, offering the chance to master advanced clinical skills such as the care of cardiothoracic surgical patients, chest tubes, and patients undergoing oncology or vascular treatments.

Nurses on this unit develop significant expertise in cancer care, surgical oncology, and managing complex conditions related to acute and chronic vascular diseases. In addition to handling advanced medical equipment essential for cancer treatment, the 8300 team is committed to continuous professional growth. We are affiliated with renowned organizations, including the Academy of Medical‑Surgical Nurses, the Oncology Nursing Society, Hospice and Palliative Care Nursing, the American Cancer Society, and the American Nurses Association.

Nurses are encouraged to pursue certifications in Medical‑Surgical Nursing, GERO‑BC, palliative care, and the ONS Chemotherapy Certification, further enhancing their skills in providing comprehensive, compassionate care. The 8300 unit combines a rich educational environment with a focus on patient‑centered care, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Job Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED Degree or GED (Required)
  • Capable of operating office and clerical equipment

Job Responsibilities
  • Communicates appropriately and effectively with internal and external customers (i.e., staff, patients, families, other departments, etc.). Relays accurate and complete information. Maintains confidentiality. Takes an active role in maintaining patient satisfaction (i.e., way‑finding, quick response to call lights and phones, etc.).
  • Demonstrates ability to appropriately respond to and prioritize work. Removes medications from the tube system and places in appropriate locked cabinet. Responds appropriately to emergency situations (i.e., Code Blue, Rapid Response Team, fire, Special Alert). Demonstrates knowledge/use of emergency systems, policies and procedures. Performs computer down time procedures according to unit/Tri Health guidelines.
  • Demonstrates/maintains knowledge of organizational and unit changes. Supports organizational and unit changes. Acknowledges need for self‑growth and accountability. Identifies areas for self‑improvement.
  • Maintains proficient knowledge of computer applications specific to unit/job (i.e., maintaining census, accurate scanning of documents, accurate transcription of physician orders in facilities not yet live on Tri Health Connect). Is knowledgeable of the function/operation of equipment specific to the role on the unit.
