Summary

An Ophthalmic Technician assists an Ophthalmologist by providing excellent patient care, performing initial testing to prepare patients for exams, and managing clinic workflow.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide exceptional customer service during every patient encounter (in person or via phone)
  • Display a professional attitude, greet patients promptly, and thank them when they leave
  • Anticipate physician needs to facilitate clinic flow
  • Practice urgency with patients’ and doctors’ time and schedule
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures, including HIPAA
  • Verify patient information by interviewing patients and recording medical history, medications, and purpose of visit
  • Record all data in the patient’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
  • Conduct eye examinations: assess pupils, muscles, visual acuity, and extra‑ocular movements
  • Perform diagnostic tests: dilation, refraction, intra‑ocular pressure, visual fields, OCT, GDX, IOL master, autorefractor, and topography
  • Document medical visits and procedures accurately and thoroughly as performed by the physician
  • Prepare patients for treatments and minor procedures; record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respiration rate) as required
  • Open and close exam rooms, keep equipment clean, stocked, and maintain accurate drug counts
  • Perform general office duties and cleaning as assigned by the manager

  • Commitment to work over 40 hours if needed and ability to work weekends when applicable
  • Reliable transportation for travel to multiple work locations with minimal notice
Education and Experience
  • Minimum required:
    High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum required:
    One year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Licenses and Credentials
  • Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification is preferred but not required
Systems and Technology
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems
  • Computer proficiency and ability to quickly learn new applications
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), standing (50%), with regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25‑50%)
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs
  • Strong fine‑motor skills for constant grasping, writing/typing, and technology use
  • Visual and auditory acuity—color, depth, peripheral vision, focus—required 100% of the time
  • Occasional driving or climbing may be necessary
