The Rental Field Technician is responsible for performing service and repair work on equipment while working both independently and as part of a team. This role requires the ability to accurately evaluate, troubleshoot, and repair a wide variety of Thompson Rents equipment in the field and in shop environments. The Field Technician must successfully complete on‑the‑job training, classroom instruction, and e-learning.
Successful candidates demonstrate initiative, strong teamwork, a commitment to customer service, and a dedication to providing efficient, effective solutions.
Advancement in Technician classification is based on attitude, skill development, and overall job performance.
Responsibilities- Adheres to and follows all applicable and required safety standards and procedures.
- Plans and performs minor repairs using correct tools and procedures.
- Performs the following tasks on engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electrical components: remove and install; disassemble and reassemble; minor adjustments as needed for service.
- Perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrates proper use of service information systems.
- Orders and returns parts for assigned jobs in a timely manner.
- Test and adjust components for optimal performance.
- Works independently in the field as required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license to be eligible for hire.

Qualifications- High school diploma or the equivalent required.
- Technical training or education preferred.
- A minimum of one (1) year's work experience involving mechanical repairs or a combination of relevant experience and equivalent technical education required.
- Experience using personal computers and basic typing skills required.
- Med Card and CDL preferred.
- MVR required.
- Intermediate engine, transmission, hydraulic, and electrical diagnostic and repair skills.
- Written and verbal communication skills required.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Area specific technical training.
- OSHA and MSHA required training.
- Vendor technical sites (Infocast, Liftnet, SIMSi, etc.).
- Work typically performed on location at customer job sites.
- Exposure to physical risk and all-weather conditions is associated with this position.
- Standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time often required.
- Ability to speak, listen, read, write, and type effectively.
- Ability to reach, kneel, grasp, stoop, and perform repetitive motions.
- Ability to lift and carry items up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to climb on and around heavy equipment.
- Ability to drive during daytime and nighttime hours.
- Exposure to potential tripping, slipping, and falling hazards.
- Work in environments with job site‑related hazards.
- Exposure to driving‑related hazards.
Ability to work effectively in stressful or high‑pressure situations. - Chemicals, construction, cranes and hoisting, eye, slips and falls, moving machinery, stationary machinery, respiratory, laceration, strains and sprains.
