Overview
Responsible for managing and maintaining the integrity of patient data ensuring the accuracy, completeness, consistency, and reliability of health data within the organization’s hybrid electronic health record (EHR) system and other health information systems. This role involves processing, validating, identifying data discrepancies, updating health data, including demographic information, medical histories, diagnoses, treatments, and other clinical data to maintain high standards of data integrity.
The HIM Data Specialist will work closely with HIM staff to support data management practices and maintain compliance with healthcare regulations and standards.
- Maintain the integrity of patient data within the organization’s hybrid EHR system and other health information systems, ensuring accuracy, completeness, consistency, and reliability.
- Process, validate, identify data discrepancies, and update health data including demographic information, medical histories, diagnoses, treatments, and other clinical data to high standards of data integrity.
- Collaborate with HIM staff to support data management practices and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and standards.
- High School Diploma or GED required. Additional education/certification in Health Information Management or related fields is a plus.
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in Health Information Management, data entry, or a similar role in a healthcare setting.
- Credentialed in Health Information Management as an RHIT or CCS not required.
- Proficiency with specialized computer software; ability to use telephone, fax, or copier as needed.
- Demonstrated ability to scan, index, analyze, and audit inpatient/outpatient/emergency department records.
- Ability to read and write and follow oral and written instructions; strong verbal communication and documentation skills.
- Ability to form effective working relationships with other employees, management, physicians and other customers.
- In-depth knowledge of healthcare regulations (HIPAA, HITECH) and standards (AHIMA, AHA).
- Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems and data management software.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary to utilize the PC and review charts; visual acuity necessary for filing and proofing documents.
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods and meet the attendance requirements of the job.
- Familiarity with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and healthcare data management and experience with healthcare regulations (i.e., HIPAA, CMS guidelines) is strongly preferred.
