Trauma Advanced Practice Provider - Montgomery, AL.

Responsibilities and duties for the Trauma Advanced Practice Provider at Hughston Trauma—supporting both inpatient and ambulatory care with emphasis on the clinic setting.

Positions Responsibilities
  • Represent Hughston Trauma and maintain professionalism during all interactions with patients, hospital staff, family, support members, and other care providers.
  • Assist clinic staff in the ambulatory setting with medication requests, patient calls/issues, appropriate triage of concerns, and required patient paperwork.
  • Perform minor procedures in the ambulatory setting (suture/staple removal, pin or external fixator removal, minor debridements, joint aspirations).
  • Maintain an APP clinic weekly with shared responsibility with other APPs for selected patients with established plans of care.
  • Assume inpatient duties one weekend per month: rounding, consultations, and assisting in surgery as needed.
  • Be responsible for night call (5 pm to 7 am) up to five nights per month for ED consults from the trauma service.
  • Perform comprehensive hospital‑based examinations and document findings in a timely manner during inpatient/hospital rotations.
  • Communicate and interact daily with APP colleagues to facilitate care coordination.
  • Work in the ambulatory setting on clinic days (minimum three days per week) and assist trauma surgeons and medical assistants evaluating and managing patients with direct oversight and collaboration.
  • Operate autonomously without direct in‑office physician presence as permitted by scope of practice.
  • Facilitate transition of care from inpatient to outpatient for patients discharged from the hospital, including referral to appropriate post‑acute settings and discharge education.
  • Provide backup support to other Trauma PA/NPs as assigned.
Clinic Duties
  • Collaborate with Hughston Orthopaedic Trauma surgeon to streamline clinic throughput.
  • Evaluate patient concerns, perform examinations, assess imaging studies, and implement care plans.
  • Communicate and document visits as required.
  • Assist with patient‑requested documentation within scope of practice.
Hughston Responsibilities
  • Utilize effective communication skills (written and verbal) with coworkers, clinic staff, supervisors, and external vendors.
  • Promote the Hughston Clinic’s role in the community by greeting and interacting with all patients, families, visitors, vendors, and guests politely.
  • Provide support or relief for other staff as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding patient and non‑patient issues.
  • Reflect the clinic’s values and uphold ethical and compliance principles in daily activities.
  • Escalate and resolve concerns and conflicts through appropriate channels.
  • Prioritize daily tasks and demonstrate problem‑solving initiative.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Full range of motion; handle and lift patients; manual and finger dexterity; standing and walking for extended periods; occasional stooping, bending, and lifting over 50 lb.
  • Requires working under stressful conditions.
  • May involve exposure to extreme cold, toxic or caustic chemicals, blood and bodily fluids, and communicable diseases.
  • Travel by plane/car may be required.
Position Requirements

Experience: One year in orthopaedics preferred; one year first assistant or OR experience preferred.

Education: Master’s degree from a regionally accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program required; surgical first assist required or obtainable within one year of hire.

Special Qualifications
  • NCCPA or NP Board certification required.
  • Maintain BLS certification.
  • Current state licensure and DEA registration required.
  • Flexibility for night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
  • Valid driver’s license with satisfactory MVR.
