Overview

The Department of Social Work and Anthropology at Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Social Work to begin August 2026. The candidate must be willing to teach primarily online and in-person evening courses; this position is not remote and faculty are expected to have a campus presence. The appointee should demonstrate excellence in scholarship and research (peer-reviewed publications), strengths in undergraduate teaching, and a commitment to service, social justice, online teaching, and promoting student-faculty research.

AUM’s BSW program is accredited by CSWE and is one of the fastest-growing majors on campus. The program, grounded in a liberal arts perspective, prepares social workers to be ethical and competent practitioners who advocate for social, environmental, and economic justice across system levels using a person-in-environment framework. The program emphasizes ethics, critical thinking, professionalism, lifelong learning, evidence-based practice, strengths-based practice, justice, service, and culturally responsive practice, with a focus on social change toward greater equity locally, nationally, and globally.

Duties

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching core and elective undergraduate Social Work courses (primarily online and evening).
  • Maintaining a productive research agenda that includes publishing and presenting in professional venues.
  • Professional advising online and on-campus students.
  • Assisting with maintaining the program’s accreditation.
  • Contributing to the service mission of the university.
Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • A DSW or PhD in Social Work and an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program with at least two years of post-MS W practice is required.
  • However, candidates with an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program with two years of full-time post-MS W experience and a PhD in a related field may be considered.

Other qualifications include:

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective, collaborative relationships with faculty and administration across the university.
  • A record of professional activities related to social work practice and education.
  • Online teaching experience preferred.
