Overview

The Monterey Fire Department currently has one (1) Fire Inspector II vacancy. This vacancy may be underfilled with a Fire Inspector I. Candidates who meet the qualifications of a Fire Inspector I are encouraged to apply. The salary and job description can be found here:

Fire Inspector I

The Fire Inspector II position is a full-time position in the Fire Prevention Division of the Fire Department. The position is responsible for a wide range of duties including, but not limited to conducting technical fire inspections, investigating complaints related to fire prevention codes and laws, maintaining records, and coordinating training and education programs which will include public education events that may occur on weekends or outside of normal business hours.

Application Process

A limited number of top applicants—based on their training, experience, and qualifications—will move forward in the selection process. The City will first review all online applications to decide who advances. Next steps may include a written exercise, skills test, panel interview, and final department interview. The Human Resources Department may adjust these steps as needed.

Before starting work, selected candidates must pass a Live Scan fingerprint background check and reference check. Applicants who complete all phases successfully will be placed on an eligibility list, active for 12 months. This list may be used to fill similar full-time, part-time, or seasonal positions.

Salary

Fire Inspector I: 80,616.00 – 98,016.00 Annually
Fire Inspector II: 88,704.00 –  Annually

Summary

Under the general direction of the Deputy Fire Marshal, to conduct technical fire inspections, plan reviews, public fire education and perform fire investigative work to ensure compliance with laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the prevention and control of fires.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This position is a non-sworn position in the Fire Department. The Fire Inspector II is a journey-level class where incumbents are expected to independently perform the full scope of assigned duties with minimal supervision. The Fire Inspector II class is distinguished from the Fire Inspector I in that incumbents in this class have responsibility for more difficult and complicated programs or projects and may assign, coordinate and provide director or indirect supervision of part time staff.
