Assistant or Associate Professor of Marine Science

The Department of Marine Science at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) invites applications for a tenure‑track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to begin in Fall 2026. The position is classified as Academic Year Faculty and will be open until filled. Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and research across a range of disciplines including organismal biology, marine biology, ecology, geology, fisheries, and related fields.

Those who use multidisciplinary techniques to address marine conservation, fisheries, and climate variability are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities
  • Teach primarily undergraduate courses (12 units/semester including up to 3 units for mentoring undergraduate and master’s student research). Courses will include lecture and lab sections such as MSCI 340 Marine Ecology, MSCI 345 Marine Biodiversity and Function, and MSCI 350 Quantitative Marine Science.
  • Employ innovative teaching and learning techniques that engage students through the use of technology, hands‑on experience, and problem‑solving.
  • Integrate undergraduate and master’s students into research or applied science programs.
  • Advise and mentor students in academics, capstone projects, internships, and post‑degree career options.
  • Mentor both undergraduate capstone projects and master’s student theses.
  • Collaborate in integrating science and policy‑relevant scholarship into CSUMB’s interdisciplinary research and teaching programs.
  • Develop professional relationships with the regional community of marine science education and research institutions, federal, state, local marine policy and management agencies, non‑profit groups, schools, and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct innovative, extramurally‑funded research in marine science leading to publications and professional visibility.
  • Contribute to department, college, and university governance through faculty meetings and committee work.
  • Help implement the goals of the College of Science and the CSUMB Vision.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Oceanography, Fisheries, Biology, Marine Science, Marine Ecology, or a related field by appointment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • Publication record in the field of expertise.
  • Capacity to develop a research program that engages both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability and desire to mentor and teach students from diverse cultural, ethnic, educational, and economic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Track record of addressing applied research questions and/or experience at the science‑policy interface.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate research into undergraduate education.
  • Experience in course and/or curriculum development.
  • Success in securing external funding to support research, including undergraduate student research.
Special Conditions of Employment

The incumbent reports to the Campus Title IX Officer for information pertaining to discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, sexual exploitation, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, and retaliation and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Orders EO 1095, EO 1096, and EO 1097.

The position is considered a “mandated reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires compliance with CSU Executive Order 1083. Confidentiality requirements apply regarding student sensitive issues. Employment is contingent upon working in the State of California.

Compensation

Assistant Professor – Anticipated hiring salary range: $7,500 to $7,917 /month ($90,000 – $95,000 annual).
Associate Professor – Anticipated hiring salary range: $8,917 to $9,417 /month ($107,000 – $113,000 annual).
