Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Interim Director of Undergraduate Advising and Student Success, the Academic Advisor provides quality academic and developmental advisement and support to undergraduate students, guiding them through the completion of all degree requirements and helping them align academic options with personal and professional goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs moderately complex student service work in academic advising for an assigned caseload of CSUMB students in specific majors, providing individual and group advising to create meaningful educational plans.
  • Reviews confidential transcripts and evaluations, recommends appropriate coursework, and uses an asset‑based approach to build on each student’s strengths, collaborating with other support programs and referring students to campus resources.
  • Manages the collection and dissemination of information about majors, programs, and services to support student success, collaborating with CSUMB departments to facilitate enrollment, degree completion, and career preparation.
  • Prepares and delivers advising presentations and workshops to inform students about advising and career‑related services and programs, collaborating with career advisors on new resources.
  • Participates in CACSS and other advisement activities, orientation, and student support programs, representing the CACSS at events such as major fairs, preview days, and open houses.
  • Performs other job‑related duties and special projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior, organizational and program management, research and interview techniques, and application of program rules. Ability to interpret regulations, plan assignments, analyze data, make logical decisions, advise students individually and in groups, and establish cooperative relationships with faculty, administrators, and community agencies.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of professional experience in a student services program area or related field, or a master’s degree in a related field to satisfy one year of experience.
  • Graduation from a four‑year college or university in the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Prior academic advising or student services experience at a public 4‑year university.
  • Familiarity with Title V and CSU General Education requirements and experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and federal regulations regarding educational records, proficiency with Oracle/People Soft/CSU Common Management System, Microsoft Office (Excel), Google Suite, Symplicity, Salesforce, or similar tools.
