CERTIFICATIONS

JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision of the Department of Parks and Recreation, Pool Manager to perform the full range of lifeguard duties and providing for the safety of persons using the swimming pool to overseeing recreational activities and routine maintenance; and to perform related work as required.

Incumbents of these seasonal part-time positions will be required to work mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends and/or holiday shifts, working approximately 20 to 30 hours per week during the City of Montebello Aquatic Season. All final selections for employment will be based on qualifications and the availability to meet the required schedule and mandatory trainings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The Senior Lifeguard is the advanced working level in the Lifeguard series. Assists in overseeing staff and recreational activities; supervises swimming, swim instruction, and special events; assigns and oversees the work of Lifeguards and other pool personnel; assists with routine inspection, cleaning and maintenance of the pool facilities as required to ensure safe and sanitary conditions; assists in other activities such as making minor adjustments to filter and chemical systems;

maintains records and reports; performs Pool Manager duties as delegated in Manager's absence.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Required Certification: Possession of a valid Lifeguard Certification; possession of a valid American Red Cross Water Safety and Instructors Certificate.

Training and

Experience:

Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Work Background: One to Two years of prior experience as instructor, coach, or lifeguard. Some experience in organizing or conducting recreational programs with experience in aquatics is desirable.

Knowledge Of:

  • Modern principles, methods, tools, and equipment required for swimming pool operation and routine maintenance.
  • Policies, rules, and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using the pool.
  • Principles and methods of artificial respiration, CPR, and the application of first aid.
  • Lifesaving equipment and its use.
  • Techniques of instructing swimming and lifesaving.
  • Basic customer service.

Ability To:

  • Explain and enforce safety rules, practices, and procedures.
  • Swim with proficiency and endurance and meet City-established standards of swimming competency.
  • Apply lifesaving techniques and first aid.
  • Lift victims from water and assistance (approximately 30 to 200 pounds).
  • Prevent dangerous situations from arising, to recognize emergencies, and to take appropriate action.
  • Exercise sound judgment in a variety of situations.
  • Effectively enforce water safety rules.
  • Interact effectively with a wide variety of people of differing personalities and temperaments.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school district personnel, coworkers, and the public.
  • Withstand exposure to sun and water for up to 8 hours a day.
  • Complete and maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Assist with swim lessons or in-water aquatics programs.
