Overview

The Weed Sprayer is responsible for weed control through the proper application of herbicides in accordance with Federal, State, and County laws as well as non-herbicide techniques such as hand-pulling. Duties include noxious weed identification, safely handling and properly mixing chemicals, spraying, and performing light maintenance and calibration of weed spraying equipment. Ability to drive a ¾ ton or larger truck with a 300-gallon tank while towing a trailer loaded with UTVs/ATVs.

Responsibilities
  • Perform weed control through proper application of herbicides and non-herbicide techniques as required.
  • Identify noxious weeds from rosette to adult stage.
  • Safely handle, mix, and apply chemicals in accordance with work orders and applicable laws/regulations; review chemical labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) before application.
  • Perform spraying operations using broadjet and hand-line systems according to department policies and procedures and applicable laws.
  • Operate vehicles and application-delivery systems, including a spray truck, ATV/UTVs, and other weed control equipment; adhere to all department safety standards including weather, traffic, water, and animals considerations.
  • Assist with regular maintenance and some repair on vehicles and equipment.
  • Properly handle rinsate materials, dispose of empty containers, and maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the unit and facility.
Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age and hold a valid Montana driver’s license.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of reading maps.
  • Must be able to compile and submit accurate daily reports.
  • Possess the ability to properly identify noxious weeds from rosette to adult stage.
  • Must mix and apply herbicides in accordance with work orders and applicable laws/regulations.
  • Must review chemical labels & SDS (Safety Data Sheets) for each product before application.
  • Knowledge of basic math for computations and knowledge of the weeds and crops grown in Montana, and the appropriate herbicides and methods that manage undesired vegetation.
  • Knowledge of vehicles used for delivery of chemicals and knowledge of small engines and how to operate and maintain them.
  • Ability to mix the correct herbicide, determine proper application conditions, monitor safety protocols, communicate effectively in person and via phone or two-way radio, read and follow instructions and SDS labels, and read maps.
  • Ability to recognize and identify noxious weeds.
Eligibility and Compliance
  • This job requires education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED.
  • This job requires freedom from illegal use of drugs and freedom from use and effects of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.
  • Must pass a background check.
