Building Inspector

Under general supervision, responsible for ensuring that project performance standards and objectives are clearly defined and achieved. This role involves identifying and addressing issues, recommending corrective actions, and verifying that work is completed to the required quality standards. Responsibilities may include conducting site visits, coordinating with contractors or internal teams, and supporting project activities as assigned by the department manager.

Primary Job Functions

• Checks and okays building plans and inspects initial building construction, repairs, and current condition to ensure adherence to contract specifications, building codes and ordinances, and zoning regulations.
• Conducts interior and exterior inspections; checks the structural quality and general safety of buildings; inspects plumbing, electrical, and other systems to ensure that they meet code; and gives approval on final inspection certificates.
• Understands and interprets building codes and conveys necessary information verbally and in documentation.
• Identifies changes in plans or construction that affect codes and communicates them to appropriate individuals.
• Documents and reports on code violations and poor compliance, including suggestions for bringing buildings up to code.
• Keeps logs, including photographs taken during inspections, and completes inspection reports.
• Issues violation notices and stop-work orders until building is compliant.
• Evaluates existing buildings which have received physical damage from earthquakes, wind events, floods, or fire, as well as investigations involving non-permitted construction.
• May be assigned to residential or commercial structures.

Required/Preferred

Education, Experience and Certification

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• 3 years of related or equivalent work experience

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• Knowledge of mechanical systems and construction management is required.
• Knowledge of facility operations, maintenance, or a related field is preferred.
• Abilities include working independently with minimal supervision.
• Abilities include lifting a minimum of 50 pounds and pushing up to 50 pounds of equipment or supplies.
• Abilities include using a computer effectively to complete tasks.
• Skills in Microsoft Word and Excel are necessary.
• Skills in written and oral communication are essential for success in this role.
