Correctional Sergeant (Correctional Officer
3) – Monroe Correctional Complex
The Washington State Department of Corrections seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to fill a permanent full‑time position at Monroe Correctional Complex (MCC).
OverviewMCC is a 1,500‑bed male/transgender all‑custody level facility located 30 miles northeast of Seattle. The complex includes five major units with varying security levels, making it the hub of medical and psychiatric care for DOC.
Responsibilities- Supervise and assist correctional officers to maintain safety and security of the facility and its residents.
- Assign posts and duties, provide instruction and training, and maintain discipline.
- Conduct inspections and ensure proper safety and security protocols are followed.
- Perform custody work—control, direct, and monitor the activities and movements of adult incarcerated individuals.
- Assist in transporting inmates, including on‑leave for medical appointments, court orders, or other authorized travel.
- Provide on‑the‑job training and monitor completion of training requirements for in‑training officers.
- Record and evaluate officer performance and assess training needs.
- Take emergency actions and intervene to control acts of negative behavior and violence by inmates, following prescribed procedures.
- Use verbal de‑escalation techniques, physical restraint, and lethal force when warranted and within policy.
- Complete written reports, logs, and other records.
- Ensure inmate, staff and public safety by restricting mail, inspecting packages for contraband, permitting authorized visitors, and enforcing visitor regulations.
- Valid Washington state driver’s license.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Three (3) years’ experience as a Correctional Officer in adult corrections.
- OR two (2) years’ experience as a Correctional Officer in adult corrections

* * completion of 30 semester or 45 hours of accredited college‑level coursework from an institution recognized by the CHEA or U.S. Department of Education. - At least one of the options above, plus the following:
- Ability to observe and strategize based on environmental conditions and human behavior.
- Proficiency with computer‑based applications.
- Ability to remain calm in volatile or emergency situations and intervene effectively.
- Knowledge of relevant law, policy, procedure, and practice, with commitment to continual learning.
- Clear, concise written communication and strong oral communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal relationship skills with a focus on positivity and professionalism.
Eligibility requires submission of a legible DD‑214 or Member 4 form. Failure to provide this by the closing date will result in no additional points.
Important Notes- Prior to hiring, a criminal background check will be conducted.
- Work will involve close proximity to inmates in a potentially hazardous setting.
- Drug‑free workplace; pre‑employment drug testing may be required.
- Access to aerosol pepper spray (Oleoresin Capsicum) and animal care programs; applicants with sensitivities should inquire.
- TB screening may be required.
- This position may be represented by a Union Shop.
- DOC complies with federal I‑9 verification; e‑Verify not used.
