The Planner, under general supervision, performs professional planning, administrative, and research work in the County Planning Department pertaining to comprehensive and small area planning, zoning administration, subdivision development, transportation planning, stormwater regulations, and the rezoning process. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Planning Director and in consultation with the Senior Planning staff.
Responsibilities- Process development applications including, but not limited to, subdivision, rezoning, special use, commercial site plan, zoning compliance, and other similar land use development applications.
- Enters projects into the Evolve System.
- Assists with rezoning applications, posting property, and gathering pertinent site data.
- Assists with the enforcement of zoning codes, visits sites and writes notices of violations.
- Performs research as necessary to gather and analyze data in preparation of ordinance amendments, rezoning requests, and other planning projects for various board meetings.
- Provides support services to Senior Planners and Stormwater Engineer.
- Serve as an information resource for walk-in traffic and telephone inquiries.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Planning, Architecture, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, or related degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certifications:
Must have a valid Driver’s License and be able to maintain a safe driving history as defined by the Union County Vehicle Use Policy.
Special Requirements: Must be proficient with technology applicable to work required of the position including Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint at an intermediate level.
Preferred QualificationsEducation and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Planning, Architecture, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, or related degree; and one (1) year of geographical information systems (GIS) experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certifications:
Certified Zoning Official (CZO) certification within 2 years upon meeting the minimum qualifications.

Physical DemandsMust be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, typewriters, blueprint machines, copiers, electric erasers, light tables, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work.
Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
Work is performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands.
