Job Summary

The Defense Senior Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for creating the methods and sequence of manufacturing operations for intricate and/or complex machined parts and assemblies that meet design and quality requirements. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, cell creation/management, tool design, standard work development, and CNC programming. Provide manufacturability input and manufacturing plans for product design or modification. Lead continuous improvement projects that support the Lean Manufacturing methodology such as set‑up reduction, kaizen events and total productive maintenance.

This position will serve as the liaison between Manufacturing Engineering and other functional groups including manufacturing, design engineering, quality, and customer service.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and prepare complete manufacturing processes and routes for tight tolerance complex parts to meet or exceed organizational goals of scrap and lead time.
  • Develop and maintain standard work documentation for navy cell manufacturing equipment and processes.
  • Evaluate complex manufacturing processes by conducting process analysis, applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials, conferring with suppliers, and soliciting observations from operators/production technicians.
  • Determine, design and implement cutting tools, fixtures, and gages for manufacturing and assembly operations.
  • Determine root cause of failures using statistical methods (e.g. design of experiment, statistical process control) that may result in changes in design, tolerances, or processing methods.
  • Evaluate product designs for manufacturability.
  • Generate part programs for 3‑ and 5‑axis CNC machining centers and OD grinders by manual and CAM programming (Esprit experience a plus).
  • Generate programs for the new capital equipment including, but not limited to, test stand and noise equipment.
  • Participate in the evaluation, procurement and start‑up of new capital equipment.
  • Develop and manage multiple project plans and schedules for work activities within timing and cost constraints.
  • Create cost justification and Capital Allocation Requests for projects along with project tracking, development of cost savings and productivity funnels and project deck.
  • Maintain ability to read and interpret drafting standards, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and to read part drawings.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing publications, establishing industry networks, benchmarking state‑of‑the‑art practices, and participating in professional associations.
  • Provide leadership to others in the department; act as prime contact on high‑level projects; establish goals and objectives required to complete projects; train and mentor less experienced employees.
  • Prepare test failure analysis for engineering review.
  • Participate in MRB meetings for material assessment and disposition.
  • Document and enforce corrective actions on open shop incident reports (SIRs).
Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Manufacturing Technology (required).
  • Experience in machining and high mix‑low volume (plus with 5 years in a manufacturing environment).
  • Minimum 3 years of engineering experience and project management.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt (required) and strong Lean experience/tools and knowledge with experience leading kaizen events.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience working in ERP business system, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, AutoCAD or Solid Edge or similar design software (required); 3‑D modeling experience is a plus.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, fundamentals of plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry; applying concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as part drawings, assembly drawings, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or associates of the organization.

Certified or Additional Skills

  • Experience with statistical methods (DOE, SPC).
  • Lean manufacturing, Kaizen, and TPM experience.
  • Knowledge of naval manufacturing processes (preferred).
