Overview
Performs technical work in the installation, inspection, repair, and maintenance of electric substation equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of an Electric Line Crew Leader.
Responsibilities- Perform routine, preventive maintenance of electric distribution substations and related components; troubleshoot faults and failures on substation components and make repairs as necessary.
- Install and maintain electric distribution substation equipment such as circuit breakers, voltage regulators, batteries, etc.
- Maintain records and files.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair components of electric distribution substations such as batteries, battery chargers, circuit breakers, voltage regulators, over-current relays, reclosing relays, differential relays, capacitor banks, substation transformers, substation transformer Load Tap Changers, etc.
- Perform maintenance on high voltage equipment up to 100,000 volts; operate specialized test equipment such as Doble tester, Transformer Turn Ratio tester, power factor tester, contact resistance tester, etc.
- Install conduit and pull wire, replace fuses, and perform other basic electrical work.
- Maintain substation buildings, fences, and grounds and perform landscaping work as required. Perform routine inspection and monitoring of substations and related facilities.
- Maintain appropriate records and files.
- Perform high voltage switching operations to isolate equipment inside the substation; install, maintain, and troubleshoot Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) components.
- Troubleshoot faults and failures on substation equipment and make repairs as necessary.
- Operate a variety of equipment such as bucket trucks, digger derricks, backhoes, mini excavators, air compressors, etc.
- Perform fiber optic splicing using fusion splicer, fiber cleaver, etc.
- Work outside normal hours in emergencies and perform on-call duties.
- Performs related tasks as required.
- General knowledge of the design and principles of various types of relays and other instruments used in electric substations.
- General knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and testing of instruments and controls.
- Thorough knowledge of the basic operation of computers and computer programs.
- Thorough knowledge of basic math skills and mathematical calculations.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions of the work; skill in the use and care of tools.
- Ability to read and understand schematic diagrams.
- Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in electrical or electronics engineering technology, or related field. Moderate experience in electric distribution substation maintenance. Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. CPR and basic first aid certification required.
