AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM AIDE (20+ HOURS) - OLD ARMORY

Performs responsible human support work assisting with after school and summer day camp program activities; does related work as required. Weekly hours will vary with a minimum average of 20 hours per week. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Recreation Center Supervisor.

The work requires light to moderate physical effort: occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds, frequent lifting of up to 10 pounds, general movement, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting; vocal communication and hearing are required for spoken interaction; visual acuity is required for depth and color perception, peripheral vision, and operating equipment. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may need to wear personal protective equipment.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assisting with after‑school program activities, transporting participants to the facility, and providing tutoring and homework help.
  • Assisting the Center Supervisor in planning, implementing, and evaluating after‑school and summer camp programs and lesson plans.
  • Taking a leadership role in the absence of the Center Supervisor, including supervisory duties when the center director is unavailable.
  • Driving a van or bus to pick up enrollees at school and for special trips, ensuring all safety procedures are followed and accounting for all passengers.

    Supervising children enrolled in after‑school activities at the recreation center and participating in program planning and evaluation.
  • Assisting with arts and crafts, drama, nature study, indoor games, sporting contests, table games, and special events.
  • Assisting with snack time, washing cups, and cleaning the area when required.
  • Providing tutoring and homework assistance to children.
  • Performing general maintenance work as required and collecting money and fees from participants.
  • Keeping records of program attendance and handling related tasks as necessary.
  • Applying knowledge of community recreation methods, relevant rules, and regulations for children’s activities, and managing a large number of children and groups.

Possesses skills to instruct recreational activities, enforce rules, maintain discipline, prepare and maintain records, and establish relationships with associates, participants, and the public.

Education And Experience

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Possession of a valid State of North Carolina commercial driver’s license (or the ability to obtain one) is preferred.
  • Possession of CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid certifications.
