Position Title: Teacher Consultant

Location: North Region (Jefferson Schools)

Reports To: Special Education Supervisor/Regional Director

Job Summary ist this job:
The Special Education Instructional Consultant collaborates with educators, students, and families to support the academic, behavioral, and social‑emotional needs of students with disabilities. The role provides expert guidance on special education strategies, individual education plans (IEPs), and fosters inclusive classroom environments.
Essential Duties
  • Support Classroom Teachers:
    • Provide consultation and professional development for general education and special education teachers on differentiating instruction for students with disabilities.
    • Assist in the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and develop strategies for classroom accommodations.
    • Collaborate with educators to create and modify curricula to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • IEP Development and Implementation:
    • Facilitate the development, monitoring, and review of IEPs for students with special needs.
    • Work with multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding special education services.
    • Ensure IEP goals and objectives are aligned with students’ academic, behavioral, and functional needs.
  • Data Collection and Analysis:
    • Monitor student progress and collect data to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and accommodations.
    • Use data to make recommendations for program adjustments and improvements.
    • Maintain detailed records of student performance, IEP meetings, and instructional strategies.
  • Support for Students with Disabilities:
    • Advocate students’ rights and needs within the educational system.
    • Provide consultative support for students when needed, including individualized or small group instruction, behavioral interventions, and crisis management.
    • Promote inclusive practices, encouraging the full participation of students with disabilities in school activities.
  • Professional Development and Training:

    • Stay current on educational trends, special education laws, and new teaching methods related to students with disabilities.
    • Mentor and guide novice special education teachers and paraprofessionals.

  • Complianceілі and Legal Responsibilities:
    • Ensure the school district adheres to all relevant laws and regulations regarding special education (e.g., IDEA, ADA, Section 504).
    • Assist in audits and assessments related to special education services and support.
  • School‑wide Support:
    • Participate in school leadership teams, student support teams, or committees related to special education services.
    • Contribute to school initiatives for creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students.
    • May apply Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) techniques with students.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
    • Maintain regular, predictable in‑person attendance.
    • Adhere to MCISD Guidelines and Policies.
    • Follow work rules.
    • Assume other duties as assigned by the Program Supervisor/Regional Director.
Education
  • Master’s degree in Special Education, required.
Certification
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with CI, LD, EI, or AI endorsement, required.
  • Ability to meet state requirements for approval as a teacher consultant for Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cognitively Impaired, Learning Disabled or Emotion-keyed students by the Education Division of Special Education, required.
