Position: Police Captain Moncks Corner Police Department

The Police Captain oversees activities of the Uniform Patrol Division, Investigations, Forensic Services and Administration ensuring an efficient and effective response to calls for service and ensuring the enforcement of state and local laws relating to public safety and welfare.

Essential Job Functions
  • Acts as Acting Chief and serve in this capacity in the Chief of Police’s absence.
  • Provides assistance to the Chief in conducting investigations, overseeing special projects and various other assignments.
  • Oversees the operation of the Uniform Patrol Division, Investigations, Forensic Services and Administration of the Police Department.
  • Assigns, directs, supervises and oversees duties of assigned staff: reviews job performance, evaluates, and makes recommendations as appropriate.
  • Assists subordinates as needed in providing advice, counseling, instruction, etc.
  • Assures that complaints made by the public are investigated promptly.
  • Receives, reviews and/or transmits daily personnel schedules, police reports, employee appraisals, incident summary reports, management information reports, etc.
  • Prepares annual budget requests for Police Department.
  • Plans daily and long-range goals for each division within the Police Department, conducts frequent studies to compare actual achievements against goals.
  • Investigates complaints on personnel received from the public or other law enforcement officers.
  • Imposes disciplinary actions when needed utilizing the Police Department’s standard operating procedures with the approval of the Chief.
  • Stresses to subordinates the importance of following established safety rules and procedures.
  • Ensures that all personnel receive training on new developments in federal and state law and office regulations.
  • Coordinates interagency activities as needed in carrying out special orders.
  • Coordinates and manages the State Accreditation process.
  • Handles all Internal Affairs investigations.
  • Manages narcotic cases.
  • Protects individuals and the public by ensuring the enforcement of all local and state laws.
  • Makes decisions at crime scenes which may be centered around life or death situations and decisions are based on the safest procedure to be followed to ensure safety to individuals involved and fellow officers/members of rescue team.
  • Oversees the organization/coordination of special details when necessary and assigns work duties and supervises subordinates when carrying out special details.
  • Physically confronts and controls violent suspects/offenders and engages in foot pursuits/vehicle pursuits to apprehend suspects.
  • Administers first-aid to the injured in emergency cases and safeguards against exposure to blood borne pathogens from accident victims, crime victims and suspects.
  • Works under stressful, high-risk situations.
  • Works on an on‑call 24-hour basis, is subject to deployment into the field during emergency incidents or crises.
  • Maintains required level of proficiency in the use of firearms and evasive action/driving skills, and maintains weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition.
  • Attends required periodic training sessions and seminars and participates in physical fitness activities.
  • Operates and maintains town vehicle and two‑way radio.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field supplemented by ten (12) years of experience in L.E.

    -1 law enforcement, some of which are at the supervisory level, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have completed the SC Criminal Justice Academy Training for a certified police officer.
  • A valid S.C. driver’s license in good standing is required. Must pass all required tests and be able to operate standard issue vehicles.
  • Must be in good physical condition.
  • Must be able to maintain required level of proficiency in the use of firearms.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check and polygraph examination.

Police Captain Grade E-115, Minimum Salary: $77,973.47
