Under the general supervision of a Sergeant, the Police Corporal exercises responsibility for enforcing all State laws, Town ordinances, and department rules, policies, orders, and procedures relating to public safety and welfare. Work involves serving as the First line supervisor on their assigned shift or special activity. Additionally, in the absence of a Sergeant, they will serve as the shift or special event supervisors.
The Corporal works under stressful and high-risk conditions and performs other duties as required.
- Works directly under the sergeant and performs all supervisory duties designated by the sergeant.
- Supervises department employees, which involves instructing, assigning, and reviewing work, maintaining standards, acting on employee problems, appraising employee performance, as well as recommending officers for promotions or discipline.
- Assists with planning, organizing, and supervising the education and enforcement efforts of the Police Department.
- Plans, organizes, and supervises education and training for the unit; and organizes and plans tactical operations for search warrants, barricaded subjects, etc.
- Enforces local, Federal, and State laws and ordinances relating to public safety and welfare; performs duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, ordinances, regulations, and safety standards.
- Assists with providing leadership and supervision of assigned subordinate Officers engaged in the activities of the assigned shift or special activity; assists with supervisory duties, including instructing, scheduling, assigning and reviewing work, maintaining standards, coordinating activities, acting on employee problems, and recommending employee discipline.
- Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; and offers advice and assistance as needed.
- Takes active charge in emergency or unusual situations; stresses and practices safety in situations where subordinates or innocent people could be endangered.
- May maintain departmental video camera systems within the department; ensure proper function and knowledge of the systems.
- Attends training sessions; maintains the required level of proficiency in firearms.
- Receives and responds to citizens’ concerns and complaints concerning law enforcement activities and personnel.
- Performs general law enforcement duties as necessary, including but not limited to patrolling assigned areas, responding to calls, maintaining public safety, arresting suspected law violators, etc.
- Inspects subordinate Officers’ uniforms and equipment for proper condition.
- Prepares cases for prosecution; provides evidence and testimony as necessary.
- Receives information from the public reporting suspected criminal activity or complaints; investigates such complaints and requests; provides the public with general assistance and information.
- Informs team members of changes in laws, policies, or procedures; implements departmental policies and procedures; and makes recommendations for improvement as needed.
- Maintains assigned vehicle and issued equipment.
- Performs miscellaneous duties (such as processing and transporting prisoners, performing traffic enforcement, providing escort service, assisting stranded motorists, etc.).
- Coordinates with other agencies in the performance of police work.
- Receives and/or reviews a variety of records and reports such as collision reports, incident reports, uniform citations, operations plans, Taser downloads, verbal and written commands and directives, law/legal information, policy/procedures, Department of Motor Vehicle information, NCIC information, and child sexual abuse report, etc.
- Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation (such as collision reports, incident reports, uniform citations, operations plans, schedules, warrants, court cases, end of shift, monthly reports, chain of evidence, etc.).
- Refers to department schedules, patrol schedules, Moncks Corner Police Department policy manual, South Carolina Code of Laws, Town maps, Town ordinances, command staff memorandums, Department of Motor Vehicle information, NCIC…
