Overview

Under direction of the Head of Youth Services with latitude for independent judgment and decision-making, assists the Head of Youth Services in collection development of children’s materials and planning, preparing and implementing children’s programs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Youth Services (ages Birth – 5th Grade) Programs – assist planning and carrying out of story times, PJ story times, Summer Reading program, Winter Reading program, special programs, special events days and holiday programs.
  • Must assist with Virtual, Offsite Programming, and school visits when needed.
  • Must have flexibility of schedule for special events.
  • Must assist with planning, preparing and implementing, and cleaning up programs.
  • Must record program attendance to supervisor.
  • Supervise children during library activities and visits
  • Provide Reader’s Advisory assistance.
  • Assist Head of Youth Services in preparing articles for newsletters outlining events and programs.
  • Staffs the service desk children’s desk as needed and maintains our open-minded, friendly customer service.
  • Monitor youth services area for safety and appropriate behavior.
  • Provides information concerning library programs, technology, policies and resources.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies in area of responsibility.
  • Shelve Children’s materials as needed.
  • Troubleshoot equipment; i.e., copy machines, printers, LAN as needed.
  • Familiar with internet, databases, online catalog
  • Answer telephone and route calls
  • Research collection development, new children’s materials during down time.
  • Attend youth seminars, classes and programs as needed.
  • Attend basic and advanced computer classes as needed.
  • Conduct library tours, as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.
Qualifications
  • Experience working with children, families and caregivers.
  • Aptitude for children’s programs.
  • Positive service attitude and a high standard of customer service required to meet, communicate with, and serve the public effectively.
  • An ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with staff and customers and to communicate.
  • Candidates must be continually positive, courteous and friendly while handling many tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and also within a team. Strong teamwork and desire to collaborate a plus!
  • Must have the ability to alphabetize with speed and accuracy; sort decimal numbers in the correct order. Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System is required.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer technology.
  • A demonstrated willingness to learn and adapt to change as needed, particularly with technology within the library.
  • Basic knowledge of collection development of all children’s printed, electronic and AV materials are required.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining a physical condition necessary for standing for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects of up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to push a cart up to 100 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and pushing; dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of office equipment and utilizing a keyboard.
  • Tasks also require sound, color, and visual perception, and oral communications ability.

Mokena Community Public Library District, Will County

Hours

(18 hour position)

Work Schedule:

  • Hours and days subject to change. Changing schedule and working during large holiday programs and during the Children’s Summer Reading Program is expected.
  • Mondays – 9:00am – 2:00pm (5 hours). Assisting with Children’s Music program from 9:00am-11:00am.
  • Tuesdays – 3:00pm – 9:00pm (6 hours). Must work one evening per week, on the same assigned evening shift as Head of Youth Services. Assisting with afternoon/evening programming, like Pajama Storytime.
  • Wednesdays – Off
  • Thursdays – Off
  • Fridays – 9:00am – 2:00pm (5 hours). Assisting with Children’s Preschool Storytime programs, program dates are subject to change.
  • Saturdays – 9:00am – 5:00pm (8 hours). Must work one Saturday a month, in addition to above schedule, on the same assigned Saturday as Head of Youth Services. Assisting with Family Storytime, holiday programs, etc.
