Maintenance and Transportation Manager

Overview

The Maintenance and Transportation Manager oversees the maintenance of plant facilities, mobile and stationary equipment, and manages transportation operations related to the recycling process. This person ensures all systems, vehicles, and machinery function efficiently and safely while supporting compliance with environmental, health, and safety standards. The manager plays a key leadership role in coordinating cross-departmental activities to ensure smooth recycling operations and transportation logistics.

• Maintenance Management
  • Plan, direct, and control the efforts of the Maintenance Department for all equipment and facilities.
  • Supervise a team of technicians and mechanics to conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on fixed and mobile plant equipment.
  • Develop, implement, and manage a preventative maintenance program to reduce unscheduled downtime.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of the equipment and facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety and environmental regulations.
  • Track issues, resolutions, and perform quality control inspections.
• Transportation Management
  • Oversee and coordinate all transportation activities for the recycling company, including routing and scheduling of vehicles.
  • Supervise and train drivers, ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local transportation safety regulations.
  • Monitor the condition and maintenance of fleet vehicles, scheduling repairs and regular inspections.
  • Maintain accurate records on vehicle use, maintenance, and inspections.
  • Manage transportation budgets, cost control, and compliance with company policies.
  • Plan and execute transportation equipment maintenance and organize required training sessions for employees, including hazardous materials handling if applicable.
• Leadership and Administration
  • Lead, coach, and evaluate maintenance and transportation personnel; participate in hiring, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Develop objectives and standards of performance for the department and report results to senior management.
  • Collaborate with other managers on operational improvements and to resolve logistical or equipment issues.
  • Uphold a proactive and safety-first maintenance culture.

• A high school diploma is required.
• Associate or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
• Proven experience in maintenance management within an industrial or recycling setting, and in transport/fleet management.
• Experience supervising multi-disciplinary teams.
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA, DOT, EPA).
• Ability to manage budgets and control operational costs.
• Technical knowledge of machinery, vehicles, and maintenance systems.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
• Valid California driver's license; CDL preferred.

• Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
• Understanding of logistics software and GPS tracking systems.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
• Experience implementing Lean or continuous improvement initiatives.
• Physical and Environmental Requirements
• Ability to work in changing environmental conditions (indoors/outdoors, varying temperatures).
• Regular standing, walking, stooping, and lifting of up to 50lbs may be required.
