Position: Electrical Engineer Asst/Assoc/Senior (Power Operations)

Overview

The Modesto Irrigation District is recruiting for a full‑time regular position in the Power Operations Department, Electric Resources Division. The role requires professional electrical engineering work related to the planning and operations of generation, transmission, distribution, substation facilities and renewable projects. The position will be filled at the appropriate level based on the qualifications of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, prioritize, and review the work of assigned staff for professional electrical engineering tasks associated with the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of District transmission and distribution facilities, generation facilities, and renewable projects.
  • Develop schedules and methods to accomplish assignments ensuring timely and efficient completion.
  • Evaluate the activities of staff, recommending improvements and modifications.
  • Perform detailed and complex analysis of the District’s transmission, subtransmission, distribution networks, and generation facilities, providing power flow studies and operational recommendations.
  • Build and maintain an updated transmission system model; conduct system import limit studies in compliance with NERC/WECC criteria.
  • Assist in developing the District’s Transmission and Distribution 5‑Year Plan and determine capital project needs.
  • Design and oversee construction of generation facilities and upgrades; support interconnection studies with outside utilities.
  • Prepare complex engineering studies, reports, technical specifications, and oversee revisions of design and construction standards.
  • Represent the District in meetings with regulatory agencies, Joint Power Agencies, and the public regarding District projects.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and the public, providing good customer service.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution.

Experience:

  • Assistant/Associate Engineer:
    One year of professional electrical engineering experience related to operation of District electric systems.
  • Associate Engineer:
    Three years of responsible experience similar to Assistant Engineer.
  • Senior Engineer:
    Three years of responsible journey experience similar to Associate Engineer.

Knowledge:

  • Principles and practices of electrical engineering related to District electric systems.
  • Mathematics used in engineering calculations.
  • Materials, equipment, and tools used in construction.
  • Modern office equipment and computer applications.
  • Effective customer service practices.

Ability:

  • Perform professional electrical engineering computations and design plans.
  • Analyze work papers and technical information, solving operational problems.
  • Apply District standards, regulations, and engineering policies.
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates and technical reports.
  • Communicate clearly in writing and orally.
  • Establish effective working relationships.
License and Certification
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • For Engineers:
    Engineer‑In‑Training certificate required; professional registration highly desirable.
  • Must obtain NERC certification as a Transmission Operator within six months of start date and maintain thereafter.
