Under the supervision of the Dean of Student Services, a Special Programs Counselor is responsible for providing comprehensive counseling services to diverse student populations. This includes academic, career, and personal counseling for students in EOPS/CARE, Foster Youth, and other disproportionately impacted groups such as Justice Involved, Veterans, CalWORKs, and more. The counselor will conduct individual appointments, walk‑in sessions, group workshops, evening and weekend assignments, and outreach activities to support students in achieving their academic goals.
Responsibilities- Demonstrate knowledge of higher education organization and structure, admissions policies, and data management software.
- Provide academic, career, and personal counseling and develop innovative program support services for EOPS/CARE/NextUP and other special populations.
- Assist faculty coordinators and administrators in analyzing data, interpreting regulations, and prioritizing workload.
- Conduct individual counseling appointments, group workshops, and teach orientation sessions to new students.
- Advise students on course selections, educational planning, transfer options, and financial aid.
- Refer students to appropriate support services and mental health counseling as needed.
- Perform outreach to local high schools and other community partners.
- Support students during probation and collaborate with CSU, UC, and private institutions.
- Teach guidance classes and participate in department and college committees.
- Work a flexible schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and possible off‑campus sites.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, social work, or related discipline. A valid Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling license is an alternative.
- California Community College Counselor credential or equivalent.
- Completed at least nine semester units of coursework related to ethnic minorities or students with language, social, or economic disadvantages.
- Six semester units of counseling practicum or field work in an EOPS program or similar setting.
- Two years of occupational experience with ethnic minorities or disadvantaged students.
- Mobility: Ability to sit or stand for long periods, move around an office, and reach above and below desk level.
- Dexterity: Fine manipulation for keyboard use, handling papers, writing, and note taking.
- Lifting: Occasional lifting of items up to 25 pounds.
- Visual Requirements: Close vision sufficient to read documents and computer screens.
- Hearing/Talking: Ability to hear normal speech, speak on the phone, and speak in person.
- Emotional/Psychological Factors: Ability to make decisions, concentrate, and manage frequent deadlines.
- Comprehensive knowledge of academic counseling at a community college.
- Experience counseling students from disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.
- Experience interpreting regulations and preparing evaluations.
- Experience reporting to external governing agencies.
- Commitment to multicultural student support and unbiased counseling.
- Skilled in developing workshops, guidance courses, and seminars.
- Proficiency with technology and assessment instruments.
- Awareness and commitment to California Community College philosophy and objectives.
- Ability to develop equity‑minded curriculum and student support practices.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and state, system, and district initiatives.
- Ability to collaborate in a collegial, participatory governance environment.
- Vision, initiative, and organizational skills for program planning and implementation.
