The Safety Officer will ensure the safety and compliance with respect to the Life Safety Code and accreditation requirements for the Environment of Care (EOC), Life Safety, Physical Environment (PE) and Emergency Management standards/regulations; abide by all compliance requirements and policies in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values; adheres to policies pertaining to confidentiality; coordinates monitoring and evaluation of ongoing conditions to identify deficiencies and opportunities for improvement related to EOC, LS and EM standards;
conducts, arranges, participates in and evaluates the effectiveness of EOC rounding to identify risks and assess conditions through University Hospital (UH) and associated buildings; serves as Chair in EOC and EM committee meetings for the hospital. Prepares and submits reports concerning findings, recommendations, actions, monitoring activities and management plans; prepares annual EOC report for Administration to include Security, Safety, Hazardous Materials and Waste, Utilities, Medical Equipmennt and Emergency Preparedness;
works with clinical and facilities administrators to develop safety policies and procedures, develop and implement performance improvement programs related to EOC, LS, PE and EM standards. Responsible for UH's PE elements of performance (formerly EC and LS), making sure documentation of compliance are complete and well documented; maintains a fire drill schedule which meets regulatory compliance and conduct required fire drills in UH facilities;
knowledge should be assessed and recorded and coaching/re-education conducted as necessary; reviews Shield reports related to Environment of Care or Life Safety. Investigates and evaluates these reports to ensure proper conclusion and prepares addtional documents as neessary to report findings to other administrative or regulatory agencies; serves as member of Incident Command during any emergency/disaster for appropriate facility; conducts at least two emergency preparedness drills annually to include after action reports and follow up to ensure after action items are completed;
works with the Mobile County Healthcare Coalition as a representative of USA Health; works with the Safety Officers at the other USA Health hospitals to collaborate and standardize processes and/or policies; conducts Pre-Construction and ICRA risk assessments for any construction project at UH or associated buildings; assists with providing education for staff with regards to EOC and EM, including but not limited to, chemical spills, fire, safe environment, safety data sheets, hurricane preparedness, mass casualty, etc.;
regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.
Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.
QualificationsBachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and five years of safety experience. Directly related safety experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required education. Healthcare and compliance experience preferred.
