Overview

Airbus Commercial Aircraft is looking for an Airframe Stress Engineer to develop long term and strategic stress relationships, with both internal and external customers, to ensure coordination and success of MAP Engineering department strategies and external partnerships. This role supports decision-making involving the work and resources of others, engages colleagues with novel and creative tools, and aligns with technical authorities to enable and support MAP delegation requests.

This is a transverse role supporting the wider AA1 community, technical signatories and approvals, and mentoring within the stress skill perimeter. Deep knowledge of Airworthiness directives (e.g., DOA and POA) is essential.

Team and environment: Our engineers at the Airbus U.S. Manufacturing facility take aircraft from concept to customer delivery, working with production teams on assembly, quality control, and health & safety.

Responsibilities
  • Support functional stress team to adhere to processes, methods & tools (PMT).
  • Responsible for task delivery for full Aircraft structures (Airframe Design and Stress domains).
  • Work with other domain Principals and HoE to define and deliver the product strategy.
  • Support through delegated authority and act as a point of escalation where appropriate.
  • Monitor/guidance/support Internal stress and design teams and Sub-contracting firms providing structure analysis work.
  • Be accountable for approved repair, rework and troubleshooting instructions as well as design update solutions in front of design/stress offices and authorities (EASA/FAA).
  • Provide airframe engineering support to the FAL US (and to remote A320 Family FALs) during the complete manufacturing process from delivery of sections, FAL and flight line activities, up to the aircraft ferry flight for all structure-related items, including engineering presentations to customers.
  • Create, approve and authorize temporary aircraft definitions (special instructions) in line with design and airworthiness requirements.
  • Challenge processes, methods and ways of working to ensure best overall delivery in Time, Cost and Quality.
  • Ensure safe operation of the product with respect to structural integrity and operational effectiveness.
  • Present technical explanations/corrective actions to the flight test department and to the customer when required (internal and external customers).
  • Provide functional guidance and strategy for the stress skill within MAP.
  • Ensure adherence to regulations, design principles, processes, methods and manufacturing capabilities guidelines; define, interpret and validate tests.
  • Interface and communicate with relevant stakeholders; provide input to design for manufacture and support to other functions as needed.
  • Utilize cross-program fertilization to challenge and maximize product performance.
  • Promote and take action to deliver commitments and strengthen customer focus.
  • Share lessons between work streams and with Principal Engineers.
  • Support design deliverables and perform other duties as assigned and adapted to FAL and AA1 requirements.
Qualifications
  • B.S. or M.S. in aerospace, mechanical or aircraft construction engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 13 years of experience in the aviation industry, preference for Airbus aircraft.
  • Capability to train towards and obtain Design Office and Chief Engineering delegations for A320 Family Aircraft.
  • Experience in airframe structures design, fatigue and damage tolerance justifications, stress calculations/justifications.
  • Knowledge of aeronautical materials and corrosion protection; repair design and stress principles.
  • Knowledge of Aircraft configuration management rules and AIRBUS internal procedures, processes and tools; experience with AIRBUS manuals (Structure Repair Manual, Aircraft Maintenance Manual, Illustrated Parts Catalog).
  • Eligible for employment in the US.
  • Willing to travel up to 10% of the time domestically and internationally within Airbus network, suppliers and customers.
Physical Requirements
  • Onsite or remote:
    Onsite 100%.
  • Must hold an EASA, TCCA, or FAA Class 2 Medical; able to perform duties as aircrew daily.
  • Vision, hearing, speaking abilities suitable for computer work, meetings, and production floor safety.
  • Ability to operate office equipment and some production tools; carry and lift up to 30 lbs/14 kg; push/pull small items; and stand or sit as required.
  • Travel independently and on short notice; walk through office and production areas, including uneven surfaces.
