Utility Coordination and Design Business Class Director
HDR seeks a technical leader for the Utility Coordination and Design Business Class. The Director will drive quality, resource availability, and delivery of utility coordination projects across the company, positioning HDR as a preferred service provider in this area.
As a senior member of the Transportation Business Group, you will collaborate with planners, engineers, architects, construction managers, and environmental specialists to solve complex mobility challenges. Your work will support safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation infrastructure, including highways, bridges, transit, rail, aviation, ports, and marine projects.
Responsibilities- Lead monthly coordination calls with Business Class leadership and section managers to address key items such as project support, workload review, and utilization.
- Support development of the Business Class, identifying upcoming projects and pursuing leadership support when needed.
- Review workload and staff availability, and work with regional leaders to achieve utilization goals.
- Participate in Project Approach and Resource (PARR) reviews and evaluate resources.
- Conduct project reviews or audits to validate quality practices; review technical and performance issues and develop remedial action.
- Serve as the focal point for delivering Utility Coordination and Design services across the Transportation Business Group and collaborate with other business classes.
- Identify and develop technical leadership within the business class, assist in hiring, promote staff interaction and communication, and manage workshare and project assignments.
- Provide direct project support for select initiatives and participate in marketing efforts such as proposals and sub-consultant identification.
- Support all phases of project development and travel nationally as required (≈15% of time).
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Professional practice, or related field.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in utility coordination or a closely related field.
- Active professional or engineering registration and related technical experience.
- Experience in developing and managing diverse teams.
- Collaborative work with business class directors, operations managers, technical directors, and marketing managers.
- Commitment to quality, continuous improvement, and HDR values.
- Active participant in an employee‑owned culture.
Geographic location is non‑specific, ideally where HDR has a significant presence. Estimated travel is 15–25% of the time, primarily to support national projects.
