Job Description Summary

The University of South Alabama’s Department of Academic Advising & Transfer Services is seeking to hire an Academic Advisor I. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.

Essential Functions
  • Provides quality first‑year academic advising to majors and pre‑majors.
  • Serves as an advisor/resource for prospective students and parents.
  • Advises students on departmental, collegiate, and University policies and procedures.
  • Advises students on programs of study and the development of appropriate academic plans.
  • Prepares letters of recommendation and letters of support for student appeals.
  • Maintains records of advising sessions.
  • Approves course selections each semester and four/five year degree plans.
  • Assists students in identifying traits related to career exploration and development.
  • Informs students of opportunities to enrich their academic experience, facilitate their academic and personal development, and support their educational success.
  • Monitors student progress, including identifying and assisting struggling or at‑risk students and referring students to appropriate University departments.
  • Utilizes various systems including Degree Works, Student Success Collaborative, and Banner to perform advising functions.
  • Interacts with students and parents at various events, including New Student Orientation.
  • Provides alternatives to students with issues relating to their major.
  • Conducts group and individual advising sessions.
  • Participates in recruitment and retention programs and initiatives.
  • Interacts by phone, letter, or in person with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required.
  • Related duties as required.
